My First Striped Bass of 2022

by Lauren Collins

Summer is here and I finally got my moment on the Miss Loretta this past weekend.  It was my first time out this season and naturally I caught the biggest fish of the day.

I'll give Ryan credit for getting the boat ready, finding the spot, preparing the bait, setting up my gear and most importantly, dealing with me, but I take full credit for casting and reeling that sucker in!

One life lesson for anyone planning to fish with someone like Ryan - never trust a fisherman when they say we won't be out there long and there's no need to pack a lunch.

Believing Ryan when he said that was a BIG mistake on my part.

The Perfect Summer Sunday

The first weekend of summer 2022 was textbook perfection.  On Saturday June 25th while I spent most of the day lounging on the beach, Ryan was hard at work finding and catching a massive amount of fish on a charter trip he was running. Apparently it was a great trip, and Ryan was kicking himself for not documenting it with his usual array of GoPro cameras etc.

If you follow MFCC a lot, you know Ryan loves to document just about everything from catching the fish to cooking it, and much to my dismay, sometimes even me eating the fish.  On Sunday June 26th Ryan asked if I would like to accompany him and his mom Kathy for a morning of fishing in an effort to repeat the success of the day before.

I was assured this would be only a 3-4 hour trip, so no lunch would be necessary.  Yeah right!  But of course at the time I believed him, and you're all lucky him and I are both still alive to tell this story.

We woke up that Sunday morning to a perfectly calm and sunny day and I was so excited to get out on the boat.  Ryan loaded up the coolers with ice and frozen mackerel for bait. I had my little bag of trail mix and some water, and we were off.  I should mention Kathy brought an entire lunch.

For a Sunday in late June, the boat ramp was surprisingly empty, and we had little trouble jetting off.  The air was warm, the birds were chirping and the beaches were full of sunbathers as we cruised on by.
