Trolling For Holdover Stripers On Cape Cod

Ryan Collins

So far this December, in my annual search for the elusive holdover striped bass, my best success has been realized via kayak.

In particular, trolling from the Hobie kayak has been hands down the most effective strategy for locating and catching holdover stripers.

This is the technique I used to locate fish during my successful holdover trip on December 1st. The video below will teach you this simple strategy.

I would like to mention that I am not wearing a lifejacket in this video, only because I had forgotten my lifejacket at home.

Obviously I definitely recommend you always wear a lifejacket in your kayak, especially during the cold weather months

I’m fortunate to have grown up on the beach, and I’ve been fishing since kindergarten. I have great family, friends and fishing experiences to be thankful for. Just being out there is enough-catching fish is just a bonus!

  1. I HAD TERRIFIC SCHOOLIE FISHING IN THE UPPER BASS RIVER SYSTEM IN MID-OCTOBER. JUST WONDERING IF THAT’S A GOOD PLACE TO MINE FOR HOLDOVERS THIS WINTER. I AM THOROUGHLY ENJOYING MY SUBSCRIPTION TO MFCC …
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

    1. I have not personally caught holdover there William, but I haven’t invested much time there either. I do think that would be an area worth investigating and I would not be surprised at all if you find some action there during the winter.

Pumped to have you onboard MFCC as a member! LMK if you decide to give Bass River a try. Gluck!

  2. I often debate putting my kayak away this time of year… I honestly feel safer in the kayak than in the water on foot..

    1. Some areas are definitely safer in the kayak than on foot, especially in the marshes. I don’t recommend walking around marshes at night unless you intimately know the area. It would be easy to fall into a drainage ditch.

  3. Still catching in December, incredible! Have you found any from shore or have your holdovers only come from the kayak so far? Certainly helps you cover more ground quickly.

    1. Yes I have found some from shore, while fishing the same area.

Find them with the kayak, then return on foot has been a good strategy.

  4. Did Lauren know you went out without a PFD. You are in deep….whatever…. even if you brave the cold.

    1. Fortunately I was fishing within just a few yards of shore, but yes you are definitely correct. Doesn’t take long for the limbs to go numb when the water temp is in the 40’s. I will certainly remember the PFD next time.
