My First Holdover Striper Trip of the Year | March 14th Report

by Ryan Collins

It had been a while since I last went fishing.  For me the month of March has consisted of a lot of video editing work, and most recently, attending and speaking at the New England Saltwater Fishing Show in Rhode Island.

So it felt really nice to be driving down the mid-Cape highway this morning before sunrise, for my first holdover striper trip of the season.  The wind was dead calm and the weather was predicted to be beautiful.

I was eagerly anticipating a serene sunrise on the water, with the chance of course, of catching a fish.

As you might already know, the striped bass migration is still a month and half away, however there some stripers that spend the winter on Cape.  During March these bass sometimes get active, especially once river herring begin to arrive.

I was placing my bet on encountering some of these holdover bass this morning as I launched my kayak in the dark, and began making my way into a backwater area that's produced well for me in the past.
