Ryan Collins
This weekend we encountered hundreds of diving birds working over fast-moving Atlantic Bonito, which just arrived here on Cape Cod.
On Saturday my friend Jay Mazzola, my wife Lauren and myself, hit the water together in search of these speedsters.
It was not long until we found dozens of terns and other seabirds diving into the water, plucking peanut bunker and other baitfish from the surface of the ocean.

Suddenly whitewater began erupting amongst the baitfish, and there was no doubt that either bonito or albies were feeding beneath the birds!

Great stuff, Ryan! Mono tied directly to jig or is that a fluoro leader? Is there any hope of catching from shore?
Hey Peter!
12 pound mono tied directly to the jig.
Unfortunately these fish were too far off the beach to catch from shore :/
Awesome stuff !
Brought me me back to the 80s- 90s . We had a ball with those fish back then too.
Reminded me of fishing with my ex wife.
Hey, 23 years with a moron like me deserves a medal.
We still laugh about the great cape cod adventures we shared.
“23 years with a moron like me deserves a medal” ~ that is an unbelievable quote Mark! Love it! LOL
Love the video. Great work Lauren, you are ready for the giants.
Multiply the fight by 1,000 and that’s what it will be like to fight a giant bluefin!
Bonito are so cool! Awesome looking and they taste great. Ryan you need a seat belt! Lauren, that looked a lot harder to bring in than your first little Striper! Holding the rod above the reel will make it a lot easier.
I’m lucky I didn’t fall overboard yesterday, it got choppy!
As you mention the bonito were delicious. I hope to get a recipe post for bonito up on the site soon.
Bonito are actually good eating? What makes them different from Albies, which I have heard are terrible eating fish?
Bonito meat is similar to swordfish meat in my opinion – it was delicious! It would make for a good fish to use in a taco because it holds together well and can take on so many different seasonings and marinades.
FYI – I just had the leftovers today for lunch (48 hours later) and they tasted delicious.
Thank you!!
It was definitely a fun fish to catch!
