October Bluefin Tuna Trips

by Ryan Collins

Fishing for recreational bluefin tuna is perhaps the most adrenaline-pumping fishing Cape Cod has to offer!  And for this October we're adding another 4 rec bluefin tuna trips to the schedule with captain Cullen Lundholm of Cape Star Charters.

Captain Cullen is as plugged-in to the tuna bite as it gets.  Over the years Cullen has put members of My Fishing Cape Cod onto more than 100 bluefin tuna and counting.

During these trips you'll be targeting school bluefin tuna.

Cullen uses top of the line equipment and has an extensive network of contacts to help him stay on the fish.

This October's tuna trips will be onboard Cullen's brand new 2024 custom built 33' Conch, equipped with the best in-class electronics and powered by twin 300hp Yamaha Four-Stroke engines which cruise at a steady 40 knots.

The 33' Conch is a fishing machine that rides smooth and has tons of space.

The 33' Conch is widely regarded as the finest center console fishing boat in its class, and it's the perfect boat for casting to bluefin tuna.

The Conch provides a steady and safe platform with ample amount of deck space to ensure your trip is both comfortable and exciting.

Tuna are great fighters and catching them is the apex of Cape Cod fishing.

During these October Rec Tuna trips you will be targeting smaller bluefin tuna in the 50-200 pound range that you can bring home to eat. Not only is fishing for tuna exhilarating, but the meat of the bluefin is one of the most highly prized seafoods on Planet Earth.

You'll have a great chance of hooking into Cape Cod's most powerful fish, and going home with a bag full of delicious tuna steaks! It's not unusual to go home with $400+ worth of tuna meat!

Seared or eaten raw, bluefin tuna is as good as it gets.

The cost is $590/person for My Fishing Cape Cod members. Members may purchase spots onboard trips for their non-member friends and family.

Online registration for October MFCC group fishing trips will open at 9am on Saturday September 28th.

Rec tuna trips will happen on:

-Friday October 18th
-Saturday October 19th
-Tuesday October 22nd

And here are the details:

  • Max number of anglers: 4
  • Trip length: 8 hours
  • Trip time: Around sunrise (exact time will be emailed to you 24hrs in advance)
  • Port of departure: Typically Marshfield, Sesuit, Bass River, Falmouth, Chatham or Orleans (exact port of departure will be emailed to you the day before)
  • Area fished: Stellwagen Bank, east of Cape Cod, or south of Martha's Vineyard
  • Techniques used: Typically casting with lures or vertical jigging with lures.  Trolling and live bait is used when necessary.
  • Gear and tackle will be provided
  • There's no bathroom on Cullen's boat but it's generally not a problem.  If you have to go, then typically you go over the side at the stern. If needed, you can use a bucket and then dump the bucket over the side.
  • While not mandatory, it is customary to give charter captains a tip at the end of the trip. For these tuna trips, a cash tip of $85/person is perfectly sufficient.

At 9am sharp on Saturday September 28th members of My Fishing Cape Cod will receive a link via email to where members can signup for trips.

If you're a member and you do not receive the email, then please visit the website at 9am, login and click the "Trips" link in the navigation menu to signup.

Obviously it would be awesome to have you onboard one of these group fishing trips for tuna!  They will be here before we know it.

Of course if you have any questions, simply reply back to this email.  I'm happy to help.

Coming up next I'll email you information about our final trips of the season for albies. In my opinion, fishing for albies is the inshore equivalent of tuna fishing. It's a blast!
