75 Years (and Counting) of Catching “Blue Bullets” at the Cape Cod Canal

Last year on December 11th I decided to try for some mackerel (blue bullets is what I prefer to call them) at my favorite place to fish, the Cape Cod Canal.

I went down to the canal while my wife was getting a perm and I just watched the folks fishing.  The action was ok, especially for this time of the year.

I could see a few medium-size blue bullets being taken, one at a time, so I put down a few pain pills, wrapped myself in my back splint, and headed down to the edge of the canal.

My regular spot was taken, so I setup a little distance away.

I began catching from my new spot, and the bites were right on the bottom, as usual, and  I managed to put away 13 blue bullets.

About the author

Carl Johansen

I have fished saltwater since 1941 at the age of 7, including 75+ years on the Canal. My wife and I raised three sons whom all fish to some degree. I have been a learner and teacher of fishing all of my life. We all learn from each other. We must share mutual respect amongst ourselves, as well as with the resource. No poaching has always been part of my philosophy, and sharing is my motto.

  • Depending upon where you are along the bulkhead will determine how successful you are. Caught a handful of medium size, plus one juvenile cod this morning . At least one fishermen got his limit of 20 fish yesterday . Peace and Prayers

    • Hi Carl,
It’s Ted Shrensel your New Jersey buddy. I have been trying to get in touch with you since we met at surfing contest. I just wanted to reach out and say it was my pleasure meeting you and spending time sharing fishing stories. I am in Wellfleet and did some surf fishing at Newcomb Hollow and walked the beach on my old legs. There were thousands of birds diving just north and out of casting range. I am heading back to N.J. Tomorrow. I will be back in Wellfleet in two or three days.I will continue to try for Stripers.

      • Teddy email is [email protected] You should still be into some fish down there for awhile. Perhaps on the way down we could meet for coffee 508 888 8401 and shoot the breeze for awhile if around. Peace and Prayers

  • Today I received a call from an old friend , who was down at the big river checking out his new rods and would you know it he bagged a couple before he got a call from his honey to tell him he had to do a little shopping. It also is noted that others were also catching a few after the current changed west and was down a couple of hours . The High moon tides mean the water level gets up a little higher . Try the flies I show above if you can get them for they are working. Hope to get down tomorrow for awhile myself . Peace and Prayers
