Mid-August marks one of the most exciting times of year for Cape Cod anglers as "funny fish season" kicks into gear. The waters around Cape Cod's south side are currently teeming with bonito, and false albacore are making their anticipated arrival, creating exceptional fishing opportunities for both boat and shore anglers.
Prime Fishing Areas for Bonito
The Monomoy area has emerged as the epicenter of bonito activity this season. Eddie Kooyomjian of Monomoy Tackle reports consistent success with particularly intense morning feeds that have been drawing crowds of charter captains and recreational anglers alike.
For anglers launching from Stage Harbor or Saquatucket, the recommended search pattern involves motoring east toward Hyannis—approximately halfway between the two ports and about a mile offshore. From this starting point, anglers should begin a systematic visual search for bird activity or surface disturbances before working west-northwest toward the middle sections of Monomoy Island.
