In this session of the My Fishing Cape Cod Podcast I interview MFCC member and professional charter captain Jason Ciancolo.
Jay and his father Don run Laura Jay Charters out of Sandwich, MA. Jay caught his first giant tuna at age 13 and has helped build Laura Jay Charters into one of the best known striped bass and bluefin charter operations on the Upper Cape.
I highly recommend listening to this podcast if you pursued bluefin tuna during 2013 or hope to catch a tuna in 2014.
More specifically, in this podcast you’ll find out about:
- Reasons behind why Stellwagen Bank & Cape Cod Bay fished poorly for tuna in 2013
- Where the tuna actually were this past season
- Jay's recommendations for tuna fishing gear and equipment
- The best techniques to use for tuna if you are new to the sport
- How to determine when to call off a trip due to weather
- How to fool sharp-eyed tuna on those grease calm sunny days
- Plus a whole lot more!
At the end of the podcast I will also answer select questions from the MFCC Facebook page.
Special thanks to my cousin Kevin Collins (that's his mugshot on the left) for producing this podcast!

Good job Ryan.
What kind of lures, and/or live bait, would be good for the Mackeral off of the jetti at scussett beach?
thx
Thanks Rob – For mackerel from the jetty I would recommend using a 30-40 pound Hyabusa Sabiki Rig with a 2-4 ounce crippled herring.
Here’s the sabiki rig http://www.amazon.com/Hayabusa-Sabiki-Squid–Pounds-branch/dp/B003OALV6K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391008631&sr=8-1&keywords=hayabusa+sabiki+rig
And here’s the crippled herring http://www.amazon.com/Luhr-Jensen-4751-034-0013-Crippled/dp/B00019N8LS/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_1
Tie the top swivel of the sabiki rig to your main line, and snap the crippled herring to the bottom of the sabiki rig. Cast as far out as you can and just reel/slowly jig the entire thing back into shore.
Gluck!!!
