The fall fishing season on Cape Cod has exploded into what many anglers are calling the best action of the year. With nor'easters pushing baitfish and predators close to shore, mid-October is proving to be prime time for both striped bass and false albacore throughout the region. Ian McPartland of the Goose Hummock Shop in Orleans shares his insights, including what he described as one of the most productive four hour false albacore days of his life.
Key Fishing Locations Producing Results
Cape Cod Canal - East End
The Canal's east end has been a reliable producer during this recent weather pattern. Ian reports fishing both morning and evening sessions the last several days, with one particularly memorable night yielding over a dozen striped bass with nothing under 32 inches. The east end has been especially productive when weather conditions make other locations unfishable or when tides switch to run into the day.
The jetty area on the Sandwich side has seen prolific bonito activity, with fish consistently showing near Old Harbor Creek and Town Neck beaches as well. These locations offer some limited protection during northeast winds while maintaining access to productive waters.
In this report, Ian does into great detail on:
- Productive fishing locations for bonito and big striped bass during this nor'easter
- Tides, times, and lures that have produced well above slot size fish inside Cape Cod Bay
- Multiple locations in Cape Cod Bay experiencing the best bass bite of the year
- South side false albacore madness including 20 albies landed in 20+ mph winds
- Cape Cod south facing coastline that is experiencing albie blitzes accessible from shore
- How to make use of your kayak to reach fish that other anglers can't access
- Detailed false albacore setups from shore and kayak producing 16-18 pound albies
- Tactics on how to improve your funny fish catch rate both from shore and the kayak
