Dawn, Fog, and Stripers: An Unforgettable Morning with My Fishing Cape Cod & Flatliner Charters

by Tracy Durkin

Sometimes the best fishing happens when you can barely see beyond your own boat.

There's something magical about being on the water at dawn, when the world is still quiet and the possibilities feel endless. This fishing adventure with My Fishing Cape Cod captain Tyler Putney of Flatliner Charters reminded me exactly why I fell in love with Cape Cod fishing in the first place—and why some of the most memorable trips happen when conditions aren't exactly perfect.

The Early Start

On the morning of July 9th, our alarm went off at 4:30 AM, but honestly, we were already awake. That's the thing about fishing trips—the anticipation makes sleep nearly impossible. By 5:00 AM sharp, we were pulling into Bass River Beach and Boat Access in Yarmouth, headlights cutting through the pre-dawn darkness. The familiar ritual of feeding the $25 cash parking fee felt like the official start of our adventure.

Walking down to the dock, we could smell the salt air and hear the gentle lapping of water against the hulls. That's when we spotted Captain Tyler Putney standing beside his 28' Whitewater center console, and we knew we were in for something special.
