Father’s Day Weekend Fluke with Bruno Demir

Cape Cod Waters Come Alive: Summer 2025

The 2025 fishing season around Cape Cod is heating up in June according to MFCC member, Bruno Demir. From productive fluke fishing in Nantucket Sound to red-hot striper action at Monomoy, these waters are delivering exceptional opportunities for those who know where to look.

Nantucket Shoals: A Fluke Paradise

Bruno recently joined Captain Phil Howarth of the Goose Hummock for what proved to be an outstanding fluke expedition to the Nantucket Shoals. Operating in 80 to 90 feet of water, the duo managed to secure their limit, with the majority of fish ranging from 20 to 24 inches and the largest measuring an impressive 26.5 inches.

Winning Baits and Lures for Nantucket Shoals

The key to their success came down to a diverse arsenal of baits and lures:

  • Local squid caught off Hyannis proved to be the top producer
  • Fluke bellies provided consistent action
  • Gulp baits remained reliable as always
  • Fluke spoons from Monomoy Tackle delivered the majority of their fish

The effectiveness of local squid cannot be overstated. When squid are running in the area, they become the primary forage, and matching this natural food source proved critical to the day's success.

Understanding Fluke Behavior and Seasonal Patterns

Captain Bruno's expertise shines when discussing fluke behavior throughout the season. Contrary to what many anglers believe, fluke don't always prefer deep water. Early in the season, these flatfish migrate from the deep southern waters, initially holding in deeper areas like the Nantucket Shoals. However, as water temperatures warm throughout the summer, fluke movement patterns shift dramatically.

The Nantucket Shoals represent one of the last bodies of water around Cape Cod to warm up each season. As temperatures rise and warm water moves northward toward Monomoy, the fluke follow this thermal highway. Later in the season, productive fluke grounds like Rose and Crown Shoal and Big Round Shoal will hold fish in much shallower water – typically just 20 to 40 feet deep...
