First Day of Fall Cape Cod Canal Report with AJ Coots of Red Top Sporting Goods

by Kevin Collins

As autumn officially arrives on Cape Cod, the fishing opportunities at the legendary Cape Cod Canal are heating up in spectacular fashion. The first day of fall 2025 brings with it not just crisp morning air and changing leaves, but some of the most diverse and productive fishing conditions the canal has seen all year. According to AJ Coots of Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay, his customers are experiencing what many describe as a "mixed bag opportunity" that showcases the very best of what Cape Cod's premier fishing destination has to offer.

Current Conditions at The Cape Cod Canal

The canal is currently experiencing some of its most consistent action of the 2025 season. While conditions haven't quite reached the legendary heights of 2017 or 2020, AJ takes note that the fishing has been notably solid and reliable over the past 7-10 days. The diversity of species available right now is particularly impressive, creating opportunities for both targeted fishing and exciting surprise catches.

In this report, AJ goes into great detail about:

  • Striped bass, bluefish, and bonito being caught in the canal as of this morning
  • Where and when the famous canal top-water blitzes are occurring
  • Which sections of the canal are fishing the best during the new moon tides this week
  • How to plan your canal fishing trip to avoid construction on the east end
  • Top lures producing the best bite for bass, blues, and funny fish
  • Tautog are now in full swing during the fall run
  • Cape Cod Bay boat report
  • Buzzards Bay boat report
