Throughout this season many folks from MFCC have been asking when we are going to have our own tournament. Well, I am happy to report that the time has come!
The first ever "My Fishing Cape Cod Derby" will start today and end at 11:59PM on October 31st. This derby ought to be a fun way of competing with other MFCC folks for bragging rights and some pretty unique prizes.

Derby Overview
There are two categories in this year's derby:
- Largest Striper
- Best Report
I encourage you to compete in both categories, and I may add a Bluefin tuna category if you folks want me to.
Anyone at all associated with MFCC is welcome to submit entries in either category. This includes your significant other, children, siblings, family members and friends. The more the merrier!
Catches and reports will be submitted online by you. The success of this derby will hinge upon the honesty of the participants, which I know will not be an issue with My Fishing Cape Codders.
We are an honest bunch!
Rules
After mulling this over, I have decided that catch and release is encouraged but not required. You can either weigh the striper yourself, or take a length and girth measurement, from which we'll derive an estimated weight.
The rest of the rules are very simple...
For the Largest Striper category:
- Catch and Release is encouraged but not required.
- Catches must be submitted via this online form
- Please weight the fish yourself, or take a length and girth measure, from which we'll derive an estimated weight
- At least 1 photo which clearly shows the size of the fish is required. Please print out and include this 2015 MFCC Derby Emblem in the photo. Additional photos are encouraged.
- A brief description of the catch is required. Full reports are encouraged.
- A video of the catch (or of the fishing experience) is not required but encouraged.
For the Best Report category:
- Catch and Release is encouraged but not required.
- Reports must be submitted via this online form. Reports can be in written or audio format.
- Written reports must be a minimum of 500 words, but I encourage you to write whatever is sufficient to share the experience.
- Audio reports must be a minimum of 5 minutes, but I encourage you to record as long as is necessary to tell a good story.
- At least 3 high quality photos must be submitted with each report.
- Videos to accompany the report are encouraged but not required.

Tight lines!
What do you think? Let me know by commenting below.
Next year, how about a category for women (of a certain age), a win by attrition is still a win! 🙂
Sure! I might even be able to work something out for the women this year. So absolutely submit a catch or report Jane. I’ll see what I can do!
Great idea, I’ll be up on the 14th till the 18th . Going up with family and friends 12 strong, we’re going to start at the canal and head up to Truro where the house is , fish as much of the cape as possible, hopefully catch a few. I’ll keep you posted on our fishing. Good luck everyone. Tight lines to all!
12 strong very nice! Sounds like an awesome trip. I’m sure you guys will find some fish. I hope to see your name on the leaderboard!
Great initiative Ryan. Is there going to be an award event at the end of the Derby?
Yes! I just need to make some calls and find a venue. I’ll keep you all posted.
Heading to Bradenton FL for the week of 10/3….do tarpon count as stripers?
LOL have fun Dan. I hope you catch a few tarpon!
I have only fished a handful of tourneys but this one looks like all fun no pressure I’m heading to Nauset in the morning never fished there maybe I’ll see some of you guys out there
Absolutely James, lots of fun and friendly competition. Received some good submissions this weekend and will update the leaderboard soon.
Sounds like a great derby. Looking forward to seeing the entries and to submitting some myself.
Good luck to everyone…
Sounds great Richard! I think we will have some good chances at some nice fish from the boat, canal and beach once storm Joaquin settles down.
Catch Em up ??????
Hey guys, when you take a photo of a striper please do your best to also include this 2015 MFCC Derby Emblem in the shot > https://myfishingcapecod.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/2015-My-Fishing-Cape-Cod-Derby.jpg
Just print out the emblem if you could.
I think including this emblem in the photo will further legitimize the catch, and also help with promoting and spreading the good word about this new friendly competition.
Thanks! And keep me posted with anything else!
Good idea
This is great, let’s go catch the first fish for the leaderboard.?
Go get ‘Em Hayden!
Yeahhhh buddy
“Hawg-tober” is underway…
Great idea Ryan! Looks good and gives us a little more incentive to get out there and enjoy the fall run!
Yes absolutely!
I know it’ll give me a bit a “boost” and added incentive to get out there when it’s cold and the wind is blowing.
Still plenty of season left.
Great work with this!
Thanks Ryan! Should be fun!
By the way Ryan, I mulled it over again and decided to make catch and release encouraged, but not required.
Catches can either be weighed with a scale, or you can submit a length and girth measurement. Either method will work.
The second category of ‘Best Report’ is a nice touch. A little added incentive to get out and fish…although the approaching winter should be enough incentive! Hopefully Joaquin decides to take a right turn and leave us alone!
I’m really looking forward to seeing the photos, videos and reports which are submitted.
I’m going to give surfcasting a try this weekend, despite Joaquin. At the least maybe fish some protected bays and shorelines in the lee of the wind.
