“Boat to Table” Dining on the Cape Cod Canal

Fishermen's View Seafood Market & Restaurant is a new "boat to table" establishment which will open this summer on the banks of the famous Cape Cod Canal.

This exciting new effort is being led by longtime fishermen and brothers, Robert and Dennis Colbert. Fishermen's View will be a family-owned business delivering a "boat-to-table" experience.

Its focus will be on food source transparency, competitive pricing, and on using the brothers' three core seafood products (lobsters, Jonah crab, and scallops) among other locally caught seafood, for both classic New England dishes and innovative seafood fare.

Background

Owner Bob Colbert with his daughter and new CEO Elizabeth Colbert.

The Colberts are part of my extended family and I have known them all my life. Over the years we have enjoyed many cheeseburgers and hotdogs together at family cookouts and get-togethers.

Do you remember last fall when MFCC made a surprise appearance on national TV during the Patriots game?

That segment was filmed on the Colbert's offshore lobster boat the Virginia Marie, which is one of the boats that will supply the new market and restaurant with fresh lobster, crab and scallop.

The Colbert brothers will use a winch to unload their catch, and those dining at the restaurant will be able to watch the entire process unfold right before their eyes.

This video filmed by Bob Colbert will provide you with an idea of what to expect...

In addition to the Virginia Marie, Fishermen's View will also be supplied by the Miss Julie, another Colbert vessel which works the waters 150 miles east of Cape Cod for lobster and crab.

Fresh scallops will be supplied by the newest addition to the Colbert fleet, the Chelsea Girl. When not at sea, you can find all three of the Colberts' boats docked at the northernmost end of the Sandwich Marina.

The market and restaurant is currently under construction right on the banks of the Cape Cod Canal, and is adjacent to the Sandwich Marina.

As fishermen working in the area for over thirty years, the Colbert family is very excited to build this space for the local community to enjoy fresh local seafood with a spectacular view of the "Big Ditch."

Coming Summer 2016

Construction began several months ago, and the crew has been working hard all winter, with the intention of opening for the 2016 summer season.

I see the restaurant and market becoming the ideal place to grab a coffee or bite to eat, while simultaneously watching for bass blitzing in the Canal.

As you can see from the photos below, we should have a nice clear view of the fishing action (and shipping action!) from the East End all the way to the Sagamore Bridge.

In conclusion I feel this new project is just one more reason to be excited for the 2016 season. We have a lot to look forward to!

As always I am happy to have you along for the adventure. The fish are coming and I think 2016 will be the best season yet.

Tight lines!

  • Hi Ryan, ( I know you from BNI). I went here the other day to get 2 4lb. lobsters. My neighbor also got lobsters and some crabs… Fabulous fish market !! I am going back tomorrow and my friends and I are going to dinner at the restaurant this week !! We love it ! Best Wishes !!!

  • Would like to wish them well in there new business, but blocking off the bulkhead is not a good way to start off with the locals.. hope karma doesn’t kick in and see your favorite lobster and scallop grounds shut down by the DMF

  • “. . . I see the restaurant and market becoming the ideal place to grab a coffee or bite to eat, while simultaneously watching for bass blitzing in the Canal. . . ”

You had me at: ‘ideal place to grab a coffee. . .’!:) And, Good job recruiting your Harvard educated CEO!:) Lots of Luck to all!

  • Just wanted to let you guys know I spoke with Bob Colbert who is an owner of Fishermen’s View.

Fishing access here will not be affected. Fishermen are welcome to continue fishing from the bulkhead as they always have.

The crew from Fishermen’s View actually said they encourage us to fish here! It will provide their patrons with something to watch as they chow down.

  • Coincidently I was at this very site today, scouting out fishing places on the canal. The restaurant looks huge and the waterside location looks perfect… looking forward to enjoying it later this summer! Is this general area one of your recommended canal fishing spots or do you suggest somewhere on the Boston side of the canal?

  • I see it as shoreline development that will restrict public access to the canal. That spot used to be used by many fisherman and squiders. I don’t like it one bit.

    • Stopped by today and it’s set back from the bulkhead and it should have no impact on shore casting or squid fishing at any time.

    • Rick I believe there will be a new dock, however I am not sure exactly what the procedure will be for tying up and going to the restaurant.

I will post back here when I learn more details. Good question!

  • REALLY looking forward to fine, waterfront dining on the banks of the canal. In addition, we’ll have an opportunity to watch fresh seafood being unloaded … dinner and a show !
The Colbert’s passion for excellence and commitment to supporting the local fishing/boating community will certainly yield a multitude of loyal customers. This marketplace and restaurant will beautifully serve the needs of people who love being by the water and the bountiful harvest provided by the ocean, while simultaneously supporting hardworking fishermen (and women!) We plan to be “regulars.”
    Good Luck !

  • I hope this new business does well. I fish right there where this place is going in. Will they still allow fishermen to use the dock or is it no trespassing now?

  • Great spot.. Best of Luck – the Cape can sure use a new Water Front restaurant. Oddly my wife (who grew up on Cape Cod) doesn’t eat sea food…. Please put some chicken on the menu as well 🙂

  • I’m always up for a new resturant, and the back story just makes it more exciting. My wife will love the boat to table aspect.

  • After the end of Joe’s lobster mart, this will be a really great restaurant to try out! I’ll be sure to try it out in June

  • Beautiful spot for a restaurant, I look forward to taking the wife there as soon as they open. Caught squid off that exact spot last season.
