As we settle into the dog days of summer on Cape Cod, the fishing scene is experiencing its characteristic seasonal shift. Eddy Kooyomjian, the founder of Monomoy Tackle, shares his insights on the current state of the bite, offering valuable perspectives on how summer conditions are affecting fish behavior.
Striped Bass: From Surface to Deep Water
The striped bass fishing around Monomoy has undergone a notable transformation from the explosive surface action witnessed in late June to a more technical, depth-oriented approach required in July. According to Eddy, the end of June saw an almost magical period where "there were bass on squid everywhere," with consistent topwater action that made the stripers relatively accessible to anglers.
However, as summer temperatures have climbed and boat traffic has increased, the striped bass have adapted their behavior patterns. The fish have shifted from their aggressive surface feeding to a more cautious approach, moving deeper into cooler waters and becoming more selective about their feeding times. This behavioral change presents both challenges and opportunities for dedicated anglers.
In this report Eddy goes into great detail about:
- Striped Bass holding in deeper water around Monomoy
- How to target and what to use for bass deeper in the water column
- Paying closer attention to tidal timing as waters warm
- How the upcoming full moon will affect the bite around Cape Cod
- Bluefish moving into our waters in numbers and where to target them
- Fluke coming inshore closer to home and becoming more accessible
- Productive July fluke locations, rigs, and jigs
- Catching squid at local piers to use for bait
- Haddock and Cod now becoming more available offshore in deep water
