Celebrating nearly a century of fishing wisdom and community spirit.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

Last month on July 30th, our My Fishing Cape Cod community celebrated a truly special milestone: member Carl Johansen turned 91 years old! This makes Carl our eldest member, representing the incredible age diversity that makes our MFCC community so unique – with members ranging from 13 to 91 years old.

From Boston Streets to Cape Cod Waters

Carl's fishing journey began in the streets of Boston, where he credits fishing with literally saving his life. The sport introduced him to mentors and older folks who helped keep him out of trouble during his formative years. This early experience with the transformative power of fishing mentorship would later inspire Carl's own mission to pass along decades of hard-earned wisdom to younger generations.

Eventually migrating to the town of Sandwich where he currently resides, Carl has spent over 75 years mastering virtually every type of fishing imaginable. From surf casting the beaches of the Outer Cape to working the waters of Cape Cod Bay, from targeting inshore species like black sea bass, stripers, and bluefish – Carl has done it all. But if we had to pinpoint where his heart truly lies, it would be the Cape Cod Canal, affectionately known as "the big ditch," where he's spent more than seven decades pursuing stripers, bluefish, tog, flounder, fluke, and mackerel.

Here's Carl in his element, catching mackerel during December from the waters of the Cape Cod Canal. This image perfectly captures the skill and technique that comes from over 75 years of fishing experience, showcasing why Carl's advice is so highly valued in our community.

Finding His MFCC Home

Carl's connection to My Fishing Cape Cod began several years ago with a simple email. He was looking for a new platform where he could share his extensive knowledge, having already built a reputation online for providing excellent fishing advice and telling epic stories of his canal and Cape Cod adventures. When we met for the first time at Leo's – Carl's favorite breakfast spot on Main Street in Buzzards Bay – we spent two solid hours discussing his vision for giving back to the fishing community.

What struck me most about Carl was his pure motivation: he wasn't looking for payment or recognition, just a platform with good vibes where people would appreciate what he had to share. That's exactly what we've been able to provide, and in return, Carl has given our community immeasurably more than we could have ever hoped for.

"Fishing saved my life" is how Carl describes his relationship to the sport. Carl has never made money through fishing - he just wants to share and pass along helpful advice to the next generation of anglers.

Carl's Incredible Contributions to Our Forum

The numbers speak volumes about Carl's dedication to our community:

  • 184 topics created – covering everything from knot tying techniques to conservation efforts
  • 944 posts – personally answering questions and sharing wisdom
  • 3,100+ likes received – a testament to the value our members place on his contributions
  • 1,200+ days visited – showing his consistent commitment to being present for our community

But Carl's impact goes far beyond these impressive statistics. He has embraced the crucial role of welcoming new members to our website, ensuring everyone feels included and valued from day one.

Beyond the Forum: A Community Leader

Carl's contributions extend well beyond our online forum. He has been a featured speaker at multiple meetups held at Fisherman's View Restaurant overlooking the east end of the Cape Cod Canal. Most notably, Carl has addressed crowds of over 200 MFCC members at both our 2024 and 2025 season kickoff events in Hyannis, providing words of wisdom to kick off each event.

Carl shares his expertise with fellow MFCC members during one of our community gatherings at Fisherman's View Restaurant, which overlooks the east end of the Cape Cod Canal. The packed room of engaged anglers demonstrates the respect and admiration Carl has earned through his generous sharing of knowledge and mentorship.

He's also been a regular presence at our Sandy Neck Beach events, attending long distance casting competitions and our 36-hour grind surf casting award ceremonies. At these gatherings, you'll find Carl handing out lures and informational pamphlets to young anglers, always ready with countless stories and engaging conversation.

An Inspiring Figure

At 91 years young, Carl Johansen represents the very best of what our fishing community can be. He embodies the spirit of mentorship that he credits with saving his own life all those years ago in Boston. Through his nearly century of experience, Carl continues to demonstrate that fishing is about so much more than just catching fish – it's about building connections, sharing knowledge, and ensuring that the wisdom of one generation flows seamlessly to the next.

Carl, as our eldest member and quite possibly our only member over 90, you are truly a treasure. Thank you for sharing your incredible wealth of knowledge and experience with all of us here at My Fishing Cape Cod. Your dedication to mentoring others and welcoming new members makes our community stronger and more vibrant.

Here's to 91 years of an extraordinary life, and to many more years of tight lines and great stories ahead!

Happy Birthday, Carl!

Tight lines! 🎣

Ryan

Carl Johansen lead off the 2025 My Fishing Cape Cod Season Kickoff Event by reciting his poem "Ode to a Rock" about angler courtesy and respect.
