Mixed Bag Magic: Haddock, Bonito, and More in Full Fall Mode

by Kevin Collins

As September winds down and October approaches, Cape Cod anglers are experiencing a true fall run mixed bag bite. Bruno Demir, of Cape & Islands Mitsubishi, reports the waters around Monomoy, Nantucket Sound, and points east of Chatham feature multiple species that are active and feeding aggressively!

Haddock Fishing: A Surprisingly Strong Season

One of the standout fisheries this fall has been the haddock bite in deeper waters east of Chatham. Bruno, an experienced Cape Cod angler and member of the My Fishing Cape Cod community, enjoyed an exceptional day yesterday targeting these bottom-dwelling fish with Captain Phil Howarth and his crew from Team Goose Hummock.

The haddock action has been particularly impressive this year, with fish cooperating in waters around 200 feet deep. The key to success has been using fresh clams and cut mackerel as bait. Given the strong currents in these deeper areas, anglers need to use substantial weight to keep their lines down and maintain contact with the bottom. The conditions during this recent trip were ideal, with slick calm seas, beautiful weather in the seventies, and cooperative fish that sent everyone home with quality fillets.

In this report, Bruno goes into great detail on:

  • General areas, depths, and bottom structure where haddock are active
  • Simple setups and baits to target Cape Cod haddock in the fall
  • Nantucket Sound forecast and fluke report
  • Monomoy region forecast and striped bass, bluefish, bonito, and false albacore reports
  • Where the most active false albacore feeds are located in Nantucket Sound
  • Giant bluefin tuna to reopen October 1st
