As we transition into mid-September on Cape Cod, the fishing opportunities are plentiful despite recent challenging weather conditions. MFCC Member, Bruno Demir from Cape & Islands Mitsubishi shares his insights from his recent trips, highlighting why this time of year is considered prime time on Cape Cod.
Inshore Fishing Opportunities Around Monomoy
The Monomoy area continues to provide excellent fishing opportunities across multiple species. This region has established itself as one of Cape Cod's premier mixed-bag fishing destinations over the past decade.
Pelagic Species
Bonito fishing remains productive around Monomoy, particularly for those launching from Chatham or Harwich. The north winds that have dominated recent weather actually provide an advantage for fishing Nantucket Sound, as they create calmer conditions compared to Cape Cod Bay where seas can reach three to four feet.
The arrival of false albacore (albies) appears imminent, with all the typical signs present:
- Abundant bluefish throughout the sound
- Bluefish of ideal size to serve as bluefin tuna bait
- Seasonal timing aligning with historical albacore arrival patterns
In this report, Bruno goes into great detail on:
- Different species being caught around the Monomoy region
- Striped bass fishing around Monomoy beginning to pick back up
- How the recent north winds will affect the fishing this weekend
- Different bottom fishing opportunities in deeper water
- Offshore giant bluefin report from the sword
- Haddock report from the figs and shipping lanes
- Fall run preview of albies and tautog in different areas
