(17:33):
Well, up next on this week's edition to the My Fishing Cape Cod podcast is our good friend Evan Eastman from down at Eastman's Sport and Tackle in beautiful Falmouth Massachusetts. Evan, how are you today?
(17:44):
I'm doing great, thanks Kevin. How about yourself?
(17:46):
So I wanted to start off today's podcast with Funny Fish. It's something that you and I have talked a lot about over the last month. We were just joined by Ryan out on the Miss Loretta in the middle of Cape Cod Bay. And it's just the top of my mind actually. The abbeys are in the bay pretty thick, which is just extremely rare. He had him breaking all around his boat while he was tuna fishing. What are you seeing down your neck of the woods?
(18:13):
Yeah, so I was out on Tuesday and we left the harbor, Falmouth Harbor around eight 30 and it was phenomenal from the heights to Trunk River for like three hours. There were pods everywhere and the seemed to die down when the tide went slack. Around that time I ended up going down the Elizabeth and got into some fish around the Tarpon area on Wednesday, left Harbor at 6:00 AM and they were pretty much in the same spot. There wasn't as much activity Wednesday morning as there was Tuesday. And same thing, once the tide went slack, they kind of disappeared and I ended up headed down to the Robinson's area and got into some really good feeds. And so that whole stretch from say waku to quick toll on the sound side of things, there's a bunch of valleys and then I've been hearing that buzzard bays been loaded with 'em too.
(19:30):
Some guys have been getting 'em south of Cleveland's ledge. Other guys, it's been a little bit farther north, like Gansett area. But yeah, there's been false core all over the place. And I will say they have been a little finicky because they're eating tiny baits. The one I caught on. Sure, one of them ones I got on Tuesday was spitting up tiny, tiny, little less than an inch long. I think they were silverside. So that's kind of been the story this year is that they've been eating tiny baits, which makes 'em harder to catch. But yeah, Tuesday, Wednesday was very, very good out there.
(20:06):
That's great to hear. And I know we haven't talked about bonito in a while. Every once in a while I've actually heard reports of them mixed in with the abbeys. Are you still hearing anything about that?
(20:16):
Yeah, occasionally. I can't say that I've talked to anybody who specifically targeted 'em and got 'em
(20:22):
Exactly. They
(20:23):
Happened to get 'em while they're alley fishing. Similar to Spanish mackerel, there's not a ton around, but there is some. So it is one of those things where you'd have to be lucky to get one. So yeah, the last three or four weeks really haven't heard a ton about Benito.
(20:42):
Let's talk about tuna a little bit, the offshore bite. Any guys coming in the shop trying their hand at tuna? Are you hearing any positive reports?
(20:51):
Yes, surprisingly, yesterday a customer came in and showed my employee a video of 60 to 70 pound bluefin busting on the surface right off a squid knock it, which that's as far as I'm aware, relatively rare thing to happen. And so the customer said that there was hundreds of 'em, so they were all over the place. And then I had also heard similar things about just south of Nomans as well. So the last three or four days there's been a lot of school size, size tunas I should say, in that Noman Squibb knock at gay head area. And this gentleman wasn't very far offshore off of Squibb. So hearing that that's something that guys, I know the weather's going to turn on us here in a day or so, but if you can get out there in the next three or four days, I would highly recommend it because it sounds like this guy hooked into a bunch of at Tunas. And I had also talked to a guy who only had Albee rods and reels hooked into some tunas around that area and pretty much got spooled. So sounds like there is a lot of bait in that area and the bluefin have moved really close to shore, which is great to hear.
(22:10):
Yeah, that's awesome that there's still so much life out there. And we're in the month of October, hopefully those fish stick around for a little while. As you mentioned, the weather for some of the guys offshore seems like it's going to turn a little bit through the course of the weekend. I think it's going to blow pretty good starting tomorrow night into Sunday. So maybe a little bit of a challenge for those guys.
(22:30):
Yeah, perhaps. It also depends on the direction of the wind, but getting to that southwest corner of the vineyard could be a challenge for some boats depending on how bad the wind is. But this season having some tunas so close to the vineyard has been really nice.
(22:54):
Now as we come back inshore, what are you hearing about stripers? We're in the middle of the fall migratory pattern. There's a lot of fish kind of moving through the area as they start to head southward. Are you hearing any of your customers having some success with stripers? You selling any eels or anything interesting?
(23:12):
Yes, I've been selling quite a bit of eels particularly last week during that or earlier this week I should say, during that really nice stretch of weather. Talked to multiple guys who have been getting some decent sized bass tossing eels along the Elizabeth Islands. Actually, one of my buddies was he actually cast netted a bunch of, there's been some bigger peanut bunker around, particularly like Falmouth Harbor for example, like the five or six inch peanut bunker. And what he's been doing is live chumming and then throwing the bigger ones hooked under their jaw out along some structure along the Elizabeth Islands and he's been doing really well doing that. And then there's been schoolies inside of cell ponds, even up to actually some bigger fish a guy was in yesterday and said that there was a big blitz going on inside of Gray Pond, which was encouraging to hear.
(24:12):
And then guys at night have been doing well on the south side of Falmouth, the stretch basically from Minot Beach to surf drive all the way down to Noka. That whole stretch has head bass. And so yeah, the last week it really picked up quite a bit relative to the previous couple weeks. So a lot of guys slinging needles and those guys lucky enough to get into some of those bigger peanuts. That's an option too, is live chum in those and throwing out the bigger ones on an inline circle hook. So yeah, it's been very good.
(24:50):
That's good to hear. And we also want to touch on the OG bite. That's a very important fall fishery. What are you hearing about toag? You're selling any green crabs, anything like that?
(25:01):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, big time. Yeah, I've been selling a lot of crabs, a lot of jigs on Tuesday. Saw guys anchored up at knobs. Good getting them there. Also lackey's area all the way down to Pulin guys are getting them there. And also on the Buzzards Bay side of the Elizabeth Islands, also the West Mhh Harbor area, the Gansett area. I know guys have been getting them over there. So yeah, the talk mission has been very good. And yeah, it's only going to get better as the water cools down. The water temperature was around 63 degrees on Wednesday and so that high fifties, low sixties is a sweet spot for tog. So I think that's going to improve as the days go by. So yeah, it's been very good and it's going to get better.
(25:51):
Well that's certainly another positive report to hear. Now as this is our first podcast in the month of October, Evan, just before I let you go, just wanted to kind of touch on what your feel is for this month. I'm feeling that we still have another good, probably solid month of fishing ahead of us for a variety of different species.
(26:12):
Yeah, absolutely. I would a hundred percent agree with you. Alves will be here unless something happens like a big big storm with some serious wind. There's just so much bait around, there's no reason for fish to leave right now. And the striper fishing is picked up considerably. You can catch a tog all the way to the end of the year. Alves probably can get 'em until the middle of November. So right now is the peak of the fall run in my opinion. And the next week or so, whether you're targeting Aldi's, stripers, there's definitely some bluefish around and then those guys targeting some recreational sized tunas. It's going to be really good I think this month
(27:02):
And the shop is ready for it. Right. Anything special you want to tell the folks about before I let you go in store? Other than your're stocked up,
(27:08):
Got some sales going on, some stuff that I have ranged from 20% all the way down to 40% off. So I got some sales going on right now and yeah, like you said, I'm fully stocked. I think that the fishing's going to be really good for the next couple of weeks. So whether you're, whatever species you're targeting, I got everything for you.
(27:30):
All right, Evan, thanks so much for sharing some of your time with us on this week's podcast and we'll talk to you in two weeks.
(27:36):
Alright, thanks Kevin. Appreciate it.
Kevin when looking for shore bound tog fishing and back in another time one place we would try is under the railroad bridge both sides of the canal on the canal side of the bridge . as close to the bridge as you can get. Bring plenty of gear , weights especially and only use one hook rigs that the weight will break off we used to make up sand bags for this The other place would be In Wareham, near the river on a nice beach . Peace and Prayers
