Understanding Angler Perceptions and Improving Catch-and-Release Handling of Stripers

by Ryan Collins

Earlier this year I attended a meeting at the Cape Cod Salties, which is a local angling group on Cape Cod. At the meeting I met Olivia Dinkelacker, who is currently studying the effects of catch-and-release fishing on coastal striped bass.

Olivia is part of a research team from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The team has launched a survey to understand perceptions and attitudes related to the status and quality of the fishery, threats to striper stocks, and the role of current regulations.

Their survey provides an opportunity to share your views and experiences, as well as play a role in shaping future education and advocacy campaigns focused on striped bass. If you would like to participate in the survey, then you can do so by visiting this link: https://bit.ly/3UChVh5

By completing the survey, you will also have the chance to win a Patagonia Guidewater backpack (retail value $299). The winner will be drawn on October 15th 2023.

  • On a semi related topic, I have noticed that most of the photos you see on MFCC show fish being held in the horizontal position. I am sure that your example is a big part of this. Thank You.

    • I agree Dex, I have learned a ton from MFCC. Crushing barbs, single hooks, release the fish quickly and much more!
