With bright sunshine and temps in the mid 50's, I figured today was as good a day as any to try for my first tog of the season. Yes it's still wicked early, but you never know unless you go!
However this adventure actually began yesterday afternoon, when I visited one of my reliable green crab trapping spots in Cape Cod Bay. I baited the trap with frozen sardines which I had purchased from a nearby grocery store and set it at low tide to soak overnight.
When I returned this morning I fully expected to see the trap loaded up with at least a couple dozen green crabs. I was shocked to discover I had only caught one despite a 16 hour soak!
Perhaps the water is still too cold and the crabs were hunkered down in the mud somewhere? This is the earliest I have ever tried to catch green crabs, so I'm not sure, but I feel cold water temp is the most likely culprit.
I pulled out my cell phone and made a call to Maco's Bait & Tackle in Buzzard's Bay to see if they had green crabs. They had some, but not many. It looked like I would be making the drive to Wareham if I wanted bait, so I loaded everything into my truck and headed their way.
