As summer winds down and early fall fishing patterns begin to emerge, Cape Cod's waters are showing mixed results across different fisheries. Sam Mullen of the Goose Hummock Shop in Orleans provides us with a comprehensive look into what's happening in the region's most productive areas and the tactics that are producing results.
Cape Cod Bay: Trolling Takes Center Stage
Cape Cod Bay continues to present challenges for shore anglers this season, with many reporting slower than usual action from the beach. However, boat anglers willing to cover water are finding success with targeted trolling approaches.
Western Bay Success: The most productive area of Cape Cod Bay has been the stretch from Barnstable extending toward Scituate. Here, anglers are employing a dual approach that's proving effective. Deep diving plugs run at approximately 5 knots are connecting with fish, while the classic tube and worm combination trolled at just 1 knot continues to produce quality striped bass. This stark difference in trolling speeds allows anglers to target fish at various activity levels and depths.
In this report, Sam goes into great detail about:
- Which parts of Cape Cod Bay are producing best for trolling methods
- Provincetown boat reports
- Surfcasting reports for backside facing beaches
- Surfcasting reports for funny fish along the south side facing beaches
- Monomoy boat reports for striped bass and funny fish
- Black sea bass season ends September 1st, but fluke bite remains strong
- Recreational bluefin tuna season is closed, but plenty of yellowfin and mahi-mahi remain
