Bass and Bonito Blitzes at Monomoy with Captain Bruno Demir

by Kevin Collins

Monomoy and Nantucket Sound are absolutely on fire right now, and MFCC Member Bruno Demir's trip this morning perfectly illustrates why August is one of the best months to fish the Cape and Islands. From spectacular bonito blitzes, and slot striped bass, to a tremendous fluke bite, and offshore pelagic opportunities, the fishing diversity available within a short boat ride is truly remarkable!

Bonito Bonanza: Tuesday Morning Blitz

The standout story from recent fishing reports centers around an absolutely epic bonito bite that's been developing between Monomoy and Saquatucket Harbor. MFCC member, Bruno Demir of Cape & Islands Mitsubishi had "lights out fishing" this morning with bonito feeding aggressively on peanut bunker in just 30 feet of water, approximately four miles from the mouth of Saquatucket.

What made this bite so special wasn't just the quantity of fish, but their impressive size. The largest bonito measured 28 inches – a very generous sized bonito for Cape Cod waters. These powerful pelagic fish were so focused on feeding that they showed little boat shyness early in the morning, creating ideal conditions for multiple hookups and extended fishing action.

In this podcast, Bruno goes into great detail about the following:

  • Bonito bite near Monomoy both casting and trolling
  • Best bonito lures for targeting bonito and how to fish them
  • Bluefish mixed in certain pockets of Monomoy and Nantucket Sound
  • Fluke fishing continues to be outstanding near Monomoy Shoals
  • Recreational bluefin tuna fishery closed by NOAA
  • Pelagic fish report from the windmills south of the Islands
  • Best ways to locate and fish for mahi-mahi and other pelagic species
