September Surge: Cape Area Fishing Heats Up as Fall Approaches

by Dan Nahorney

Action is picking up all across the Cape area! MFCC members are reporting amazing action from Buzzards Bay to the Canyons, so let's dig in and see where the action is!

September Fly Fishing

Fly anglers are reporting success chasing stripers and bonito. In the Fly Fishing and Fly Tying 2025 thread, Dan Wright reports that it was a thrill and a blessing to catch his first albie on the fly, describing the action with the speed demon as part rodeo, part street fight!

Member Dan Wright caught his first ever albie on the fly rod on September 11th.

Anthony Besaw reports the back bays are ready to explode with peanut bunker. On a recent trip, Anthony said he had a good outing, enticing several sub-slot stripers to hit a flatwing he tied.

Like many of us who have been challenged to consistently find stripers in the surf this year, Ken Holt had a few difficult outings before reporting he recently experienced the most productive night of fly fishing of his life!

Ken Holt recently had his most productive fishing night, catching at least 14 stripers, including a personal best 38” monster. Ken fished the incoming tide about two hours before high, using a small black and blue clouser minnow.

Ken landed at least 14 stripers ranging in size from one outlier at 17" all the way up to a 38" personal best monster. The majority of the fish were 27-28", but Ken caught several that topped 30".

To top it off, most were in 3-4 feet of water, so when they hit, the water directly in front of him blew up!

Ken caught the stripers on a small black and blue clouser minnow. He fished the incoming tide about two hours before high until things slowed at high tide.

The Beach Boys: Surf Fishing Success

While many of us have reported challenging conditions through the year, in the MFCC Surfcasters Thread - Summer 2025, the "Beach Boys" are singing a different tune this month.

For ten epic nights, a group of MFCC members, coined the Beach Boys, reported fun, fun, fun while they caught striper after striper! Some of the Beach Boys members include Mike Marcus, Jim Kelly, Mike Remlinger, Scott Silver, Tim Donnelly, and Jeffrey Cotto.

Post after post shows pictures of healthy slot and well-above fish being displayed by this talented group of MFCC members who banded together for some incredible action in the surf.

Jim Kelly's Monster Night

On one evening, Jim Kelly had a night to remember — catching a 45-inch, nearly 40-pound striper, as well as a 39-inch beast, along with some other over-slot bass too!

Jim Kelly needs two hands to show this monster striper he caught during a recent outing. A member of the “Beach Boys” fishing group, Jim had an amazing night with several above slot fish keeping the lines tight all evening!

Jeff Cotto not only helped to get Jim's 45-inch bass safely released, but he also found time to land a 35-incher along with several others over 31 inches.

Lead singer Mike Marcus reports the northeast wind conditions helped to hold the bait in place, keeping the super-sized bass hanging around the same area. Way to go Beach Boys!

Cape Cod Bay Reports

In the Cape Cod Bay 2025 thread, Scott Silver reports tracking down some gator blues in 20 to 30 feet of water off Eastham. While blues are known to leave an oil slick of chomped-up bait, Scott says they didn't see any flocks of birds or obvious bait piles. Blind casting produced big bluefish crushing topwater lures.

Scott's day on the water also included a full out-of-the-water sturgeon breach and airborne mola molas — a day to remember.

Graham Stephens reports finding a few nice cod working the ledges along the western coast of Cape Cod Bay. Graham used Monomoy Tackle grub teaser rigs with a metal jig to entice the hits.

Graham Stephens recently tracked down a nice sized cod in the western section of Cape Cod Bay. Graham reports he worked the ledges to find the good fighting fish.

Buzzards Bay Action

In the Buzzards Bay 2025 thread, Kitt Sawitsky reports there are good-sized fluke in the canal area. Recently, Kitt also found some blues on top with a few schoolies mixed in.

Kitt Sawitsky caught this nice sized fluke on a peanut bunker fished on the bottom.

Thomas Dowd caught some bonito and smoker-sized bluefish recently just north of Wings Neck. Thomas reports the bonito spit up some silversides, and he saw a big school of peanut bunker coming out of the back bays on the way in.

Offshore Tuna Fishing

In the 2025 Bluefin Tuna Season thread, Mike Lucas reports catching 10 yellowfin in Atlantis recently. Mike reports the yellowfin fishing was like an albie blitz, with 30-50 pound tuna jumping out of the water within 20 feet of the boat!

Bob Canal went to the canyons with the Viking Five Star crew out of Montauk, New York. Bob reports limiting out on yellowfin and catching a couple of good-sized bigeyes in the first three hours on jigs.

Bob Canal proudly displays one of the yellowfin tuna he caught on a recent trip to the canyons.

False Albacore Fishing

In the Albie Fishing 2025 thread, Todd Ongaro reports he had an epic day recently fishing for albies out of Point Judith. Todd reports the albies were abundant and cooperative for most of the morning. They were hitting blue and pink epoxies.

Fall Tautog Season Begins

With the weather cooling, anglers are beginning to post in the Tautog Fall 2025 thread. Garrett Wilga reports spending a few hours on Cleveland Ledge recently, moving from rock pile to rock pile, catching some good-sized fish, but it was a very slow, tough grind. The wind and tide were working against each other, making it hard to stay on the fish.

Fishing out of Edgartown, Rafael Vasconcelos reports fishing off a rock pile near State Beach recently, finding black sea bass along with smaller tog.

Fall is here – grab your gear and catch ‘em up!

Tight lines!
