Targeting Stripers from Shore on Cape Cod using Magic Swimmers

I discovered just how effective the white slow-sinking Sebile Magic Swimmer can be during the spring of 2014. The lure caught me a lot of fish during the day and at night.

Sebile Magic Swimmers are a great choice for beginners. This video explains the basics of how to use this popular plug for striped bass from shore during the spring on Cape Cod.

Beneath this video MFCC members will find additional information about the areas where I found success using Sebile Magic Swimmers during the spring of 2014.

We'll also discuss some other "must-know" information about fishing the Magic Swimmer, such as why you should swap out the hooks and split rings.

Must-Know Info

I definitely recommend swapping out the factory treble hooks that come with the Sebiles. These hooks will bend under the pressure of a big striped bass.

Use a pair of split ring pliers to remove the factory hook, and replace them with a Mustad VMC treble hook of the same size. If you need help just swing by Canal Bait and Tackle in Sagamore and see Jeff.

I have been told that the factory split rings have also failed for some unlucky anglers, so consider swapping those out to a "beefier" version. However, I have not personally yet had any trouble with the split rings.

3 Areas To Fish Sebiles

During the spring of 2014 I was fortunate to experience several awesome surfcasting trips using a white Sebile Magic Swimmer. I cannot wait to hit these areas again come May and June!

All these trips happened while fishing 3 general areas of Cape Cod.

If you're logged in as a My Fishing Cape Cod member, you will be able to click below to download photos of these 3 areas where I had success fishing Sebile Magic Swimmers during the spring of 2014.

If the striped bass biomass migrates north around Outer Cape Cod (as I feel they did last year) then the areas in Photo Album #1 and Photo Album #2 may fish very well.

The area in Photo Album #3 will probably fish well regardless. However your odds at this location may improve if the biomass of bass choose to migrate through the Cape Cod Canal.

I don't reveal the names of specific beaches and locations, but you may recognize some landmarks in the photos if you happen to be familiar with the areas.

The fish will be here soon!

    • Hey Charles, I was using the smaller version Sebile in this video (however I do like the 4oz slow sinking).

In this video I believe I was using the 6.5 inch 1.5oz slow sinking.

I bought two of the slow sinking lures from Jeff at the RI show (their version ).
Do you think the hooks need to be swapped

  • Hi Ryan, I havnt used the magic swimmers much. How do they perform in strong current like the canal or some of the smaller estuaries that can have a ripping out going tide? Would u switch to a fast sinking? Same steady retreive? Thanks!

    • Hi Brian, the Magic Swimmers work well in current. I have reeled them as fast as possible at the Canal and gotten bit. I have also reeled them extremely slow and that’s worked too.

I have only used the Slow Sinking, even at the Canal. The hits on the surface are ferocious!

  • Ryan,
3 for 3! Although #2 was tough. I had to go to high resolution and do some research before I figured it out.
