After what many anglers would describe as a lackluster summer season, the Cape Cod Canal is finally showing signs of life as we move into September. Recent reports from AJ Coots of Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay paint an encouraging picture of what's shaping up to be a promising fall fishing season along one of New England's most iconic fishing destinations.
Current Fishing Conditions at the Cape Cod Canal
The Cape Cod Canal has experienced a dramatic turnaround in fishing activity over the past couple of weeks. After months of frustratingly inconsistent action, anglers are now finding themselves in the enviable position of targeting multiple species in the same trip. The canal is currently hosting an impressive mix of striped bass, bluefish, and bonito, creating the kind of diverse fishing opportunities that make the canal famous.
What makes this recent uptick particularly noteworthy is the abundance of baitfish that has moved into the area. Peanut bunker (juvenile menhaden) and mackerel are now present in good numbers throughout the canal, providing the forage base that attracts and holds gamefish. As we all know, bait as been present throughout the canal this summer, but the difference now is there are actively feeding fish more consistently on these bait schools.
