As autumn settles over Cape Cod and water temperatures drop into that magical 60 degree range, savvy anglers turn their attention to one of the region's most underrated gamefish: tautog. Eddy Kooyomjian, the founder of Monomoy Tackle, shares his Buzzards Bay tog report and his successful fall tog fishing strategies.
Fall Tog Fishing in Buzzards Bay: Locations and Depth
Buzzards Bay has emerged as a hotspot for fall tog fishing, particularly for those launching from Taylor Point. The beauty of this fishery lies in its accessibility and the variety of depths that hold fish during the fall transition. Eddy and his brother Mark have targeted a range of water depths with impressive results, finding that the shallow water bite was particularly strong during recent outings.
The productive zones ranged from surprisingly shallow water at 15-20 feet to deeper structures at 28-40 feet. Interestingly, the shallow water fishing has proven superior during the heart of the fall season, which makes sense given the water temperature dynamics. Buzzards Bay is known for holding warmer water longer than many other Cape Cod locations, and as temperatures cool into that optimal 58-62 degree range, tog become more active in the skinny water where both the fish and their prey are most comfortable.
In this report, Eddy goes into great detail on:
