As September settles over Cape Cod and the Islands, anglers are experiencing a transitional period that marks the beginning of what many consider the most exciting fishing of the year. Recent reports from Amy Wrightson of Sports Port in Hyannis provide insight into the current fishing landscape along the south side of Cape Cod where bonito are stealing the show and striped bass are showing promising signs of improvement.
Funny Fish Scene: Bonito Leading the Charge
The pursuit of "funny fish" – the collective term for bonito and false albacore that drive Cape Cod anglers into a seasonal frenzy – presents a mixed but improving picture this September. While last year's feeding frenzies haven't yet materialized in full force, bonito are making their presence known across multiple locations.
In this report, Amy goes into great detail about:
- Where to look for and locate bonito and false albacore from the south side
- Areas bonito and false albacore have been biting in Vineyard Sound
- Striped bass and funny fish around the Elizabeth Islands
- Bonito spotted and targeted by charter captains in Cape Cod Bay
- Successful funny fish lures for both species
- Striped bass eating live eels from shore along the south side
- Bluefish reports from both Cape Cod Bay and the south side
