Early September Fishing Update: Hot Spots, Big Fish & What’s Working Now

by Dan Nahorney

Action in the surf is heating up, false albacore are here, offshore fishing is solid, and the pond water is finally cooling down — grab your favorite cold beverage and dig into reports from your MFCC community to make your next outing more successful!

Albies Are Here

Albies are here! Proof can be found in the Albie Fishing 2025 thread that includes both fishing intel as well as photographic evidence that these speed demons are in our waters. Be sure to check out the thread that includes a bunch of pictures of 10+ pound false albacore.

Allen Seiple proudly shows the nice-sized albie he caught using a pink diving Yozuri.

Consistent Striper Action

In the MFCC Surfcasters' - Summer 2025 thread, Stephen O'Donnell provides a detailed report of fishing with several other MFCC members. They have consistently been on stripers over a nearly two-week stretch.

Stephen reports a good-sized school of aggressive fish comes in like clockwork to feed during their preferred tide after sundown. Most of the fish have been stripers with a few bluefish mixed in.

The bass want 5-9" soft plastics, on weightless swimbait hooks or rigged sluggos. Interestingly, Stephen reports that the color of the offering doesn't particularly matter, as the group has been successful with everything from white Snax XL to blurple on the darker nights. Sometimes the fish prefer skinny sandeel-type plugs/needles.

Members Mike Marcus, Jim Kelly and Mike Remlinger also got into some beautiful bass and bluefish on Tuesday night!

Family Fishing Success

Jeff Richard was at Barnstable Harbor at the top of the incoming tide and proudly reported here that his grandson caught his first striper of the year! Grandpa then wrestled with a gator blue who put on a solid fight.

Team Efforts Pay Off

Be sure to see the post about three MFCC members teaming up on a solid night in the surf. StriperMadness Mike, Carl L, and Jim Kelly enjoyed the camaraderie as well as the fishing.

Carl's gorilla bluefish, 31.5 inches and a solid 15 pounds, was the catch of the evening, and Jim's 28-inch slot bass was a nice kicker to round off the night. Mike was excited to see the beaches produce "big ones" again and is hoping that September will kick off a resurgence of successful surfcasting for bass and blues.

The MFCC community is just that — a community where some anglers form friendships that make outings even more enjoyable. On a recent outing with two other MFCC members, Carl L is pictured with a giant gorilla bluefish, 31.5 inches and a solid 15 pounds — one of a few reports we've seen this season of large blues being caught from shore. Hopefully this is a preview of the fall season.

Cape Cod Bay

In the Cape Cod Bay 2025 thread, Logan Bird, who has been working on a charter boat, provides a detailed, specific report of where the action is and what to use. Other reports show the area around Provincetown holding good quantities of stripers.

Scituate/Cohasset/Marshfield Area

In the Scituate/Cohasset/Marshfield - 2025 thread, Terry Green and his grandson CJ reported two solid outings: the first for haddock, then another bottom fishing outing that ended up with them catching seven stripers on tube and worm.

Getting in a final outing of the summer, Terry Green's grandson CJ works hard to display this solid striper he caught on tube and worm. The pair have teamed up catching everything from haddock to a red fish, some cod, and stripers.

Monomoy Update

Since Hurricane Erin passed by, reports in the Monomoy Fishing 2025 thread have not been very encouraging. The Monomoy fishery has been perhaps the most consistent area all year; perhaps a few more days of normal-type wind and wave activity will get the fish back into the rips.

Buzzards Bay Action

In the Buzzards Bay 2025 thread, Nicholas Caparell reports a successful outing, catching some bonito and small blues.

Nicholas Caparell caught this nice-sized bonito in Buzzards Bay recently. With weather settling into a typical late summer pattern, and some boats already out of the water, it might get a bit easier to stay on top of a solid bonito bite.

John Steele reports that in the Wings Neck area, the bonito and blues have been chomping on the large amounts of bait in the water.

Tautog Season Begins

Cooler weather means some members will turn their attention to tautog. In the Tautog Fall 2025 thread, Captain Jason Colby of Little Sister Charters reports good fishing with tautog limits for a few weeks already!

Captain Colby recommends looking for 20-30 foot deep structure like rocks and/or mussel beds. Set up on the up-tide edge of the structure and wait them out for no more than 30 minutes. If you aren't catching by then, try another spot.

Bluefin Tuna Success

In the 2025 Bluefin Tuna Season thread, Mark Burton went out with Captain Tyler Putney to chase bluefin tuna. Mark reports getting two fish on, losing both, then hooking and battling the third they got to the boat. Weighing in at 440 pounds and measuring 98", the tuna put on quite a fight!

Proving once again not to get discouraged by a couple of fish that get away, Mark Burton's recent outing with Captain Tyler Putney was successful, boating this 98-inch, 440-pound bluefin!

Freshwater Opportunities

While a majority of MFCC members may be spending most of their time in saltwater, Striper Madness Mike reminds us that cooling water in ponds is triggering bass to fatten up for the long winter ahead.

In the Freshwater Bass (2025) thread, Jeff Coates is pictured with a nearly 5-pound smallmouth bass — an exceptionally sized fish! Congrats to Jeff, and also be sure to check out Mike's posts of a nice-sized largemouth bass and another solid smallmouth bass.

MFCC member Jeff Coates proudly shows off the nearly 5-pound smallmouth bass he recently caught. The chilly nights are helping to cool the water, start killing off some weeds, and making trophy-sized fish more active.

September has brought cooler nights, a lot less traffic, and hungry fish to the Cape - catch 'em up!

Tight lines! 🎣
