The late summer fishing season on Cape Cod has reached an exciting turning point with the arrival of false albacore and the continued presence of bonito. Recent reports from Amy Wrightson of Sports Port in Hyannis reveal excellent opportunities for multiple species, though the finicky nature of these pelagic fish requires local knowledge, tackle, and presentation.
False Albacore Arrive: "Funny Fish" Season Is Here
Bonito & Albacore Locations
The waters surrounding Martha's Vineyard have emerged as a hotspot for false albacore activity. Recent fishing trips have confirmed active feeding schools close to shore, with birds marking the areas where these fast-moving fish are busting bait on the surface. The classic signs are all there - flocks of diving birds, surface disturbances, and the characteristic feeding frenzies that get anglers' hearts racing!
When targeting these areas, look for bird activity as your primary indicator. The combination of terns, gulls, and other seabirds diving and working an area almost always indicates baitfish below, which attracts the albies and bonito. The fish tend to be relatively close to shore around the Vineyard, making them accessible to boat, kayak, and shore anglers.
