Fly Fishing a Fall Striper Blitz in the Skinniest Water Imaginable

by Ryan Collins

Eight inches of water. Dozens of striped bass.

On the afternoon of October 7th, I returned to a Cape Cod beach after an incredible morning blitz and found hundreds of birds working over a bar at dead low tide. Below them, striped bass were chasing peanut bunker in water so shallow you could see every fish.

I grabbed the fly rod, and the fish ate just ten feet from my rod tip. They were schoolie stripers, below the slot, and a great sign for the future of our fishery!

🎣 What you’ll see:
Sight fishing striped bass in super skinny water
Why a floating line is a must in water this shallow
Shallow-water eats you can watch from start to finish

⚠️ Safety note: The bar I fished becomes an island as the tide rises and disappears at high water. Know your tides and always leave yourself a safe way back.
