The aftermath of Hurricane Erin combined with the upcoming new moon have brought reports of increased activity in the Cape Cod Canal and promising conditions developing across the region. As we head into the final week of August, the combination of post-storm conditions, an approaching new moon, and optimal tidal phases is creating what could some exceptional fishing opportunities.
Cape Cod Canal Comes to Life
The Cape Cod Canal, which has been somewhat inconsistent throughout the summer, is finally showing the signs anglers have been waiting for. The northeast winds that accompanied the tale end of the hurricane appear to have pushed baitfish deeper into Cape Cod Bay and into the canal.
AJ Coots from Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay reported encouraging striped bass activity this morning at the east end of the Cape Cod Canal. The west end has been producing bonito in the mid-canal area, while the east end delivered a late morning topwater bite featuring a mixed bag of striped bass and bluefish. This east end action occurred between 9-10 AM on Friday, August 22nd, making it an accessible option for anglers who prefer not to start their fishing day in pre-dawn darkness.
In this report, AJ provides detailed information on:
- This morning's Cape Cod Canal east end topwater blitz
