Nighttime Kayak Fishing for Summertime Stripers

by Ryan Collins

In the second part of today's episode of My Fishing Cape Cod TV, I went kayak fishing at night with live eels for striped bass.

July 31st, 2023

The evening of July 31st was flat calm with a bright full moon. It was an absolutely breathtaking night to be on the water.

I wasn't planning on night fishing because I had just spent the day shark fishing, but with such perfect weather conditions I decided to give it a try.

A few days before on July 26th, I had spotted big bass swimming through one of my favorite boulder fields in Cape Cod Bay while flying my drone.

Here's a some drone footage of those bass swimming through the boulder fields. I've also included the general location where I filmed the drone footage and the kayak episode.

As I paddled towards the boulder field I was hopeful some of those quality stripers were still around.

For bait and tackle I was using a live eel on a size 6 BKK circle hook. The terrain was gnarly, so I chose to tie on an extra long 80 pound leader. I was using a medium action 6 foot long spinning road with a Van Staal VM150 spinning reel and 30 pound Power Pro braid.

To find the bass I slowly paddled my kayak through the rocks until I began spooking fish. I could see bass swirling in the moonlight and I was relieved that they were still here!

    • If I had sat down on the couch, then that would have been game over. Probably would have fallen asleep in no time after spending all day shark fishing, LOL. Glad I went to say the least!
