This trip had been in the works since February — the original plan was to fish Cape Cod Bay with Captain Diogo of Gorilla Tactics Sportfishing. But after a spring full of wind and rain, we finally had our window.
A recent push of tiny baitfish in the bay forced a last-minute audible, and we made the call to chase big stripers on squid in Nantucket Sound — with the fly rod.

Yesterday morning we steamed out of a chilly Bass River at 7 am. By the end of the day, I'd broken my personal best on the fly rod. Twice!
The First Rip

A striper explodes on the Doc
We pulled up to our first Nantucket Sound rip and immediately saw signs of life — birds, squid, and stripers all made themselves known within minutes. Throwing a large baitfish fly on the 10-weight was the first move, but despite all the action on arrival, the fish were hesitant to commit.
So we put the bait-and-switch into action. The doc was cast and fish swirled behind it, but none were willing to commit — until Diogo threaded it back through the zone one more time.
A fish swirled. I presented a squid fly off the back cast, right in the strike zone. I stripped it just a little — and the fish was on. It was powerful in the rip and had me on the reel within seconds.
As it approached the boat, it tried to make a run straight to the depths, but I applied the brakes and Diogo brought it aboard — my biggest fly rod striper to date.
