What To Expect During A My Fishing Cape Cod Group Fishing Trip

Ryan Collins

Back during the winter of 2015 I sat down at the British Beer Company in Sandwich with captain Cullen Lundholm of Cape Star Charters, to discuss a dilemma that many anglers face.

I explained to Cullen that there are many people who love to fish, but they cannot afford or justify spending $800-$1200 on a fishing charter.

Cullen and I also chatted about the challenges people face trying to get their own group together to split the cost of a charter. A lot of people don't have friends who are interested in fishing, and if they do have friends who are interested in fishing, it can still be a pain to schedule dates and organize trips.

It was at that moment Cullen and I decided to offer a solution. We would create an avenue for people to go charter fishing at an affordable per person rate, and we would handle all the organization and all the logistics.

Group Trip Benefits

Since that night in 2015 we have run more than 40 successful group fishing trips, putting anglers from My Fishing Cape Cod on striped bass, bluefish and other popular species.

Not only have people caught huge fish at an affordable rate, but they have also had the valuable opportunity to learn firsthand from Cullen, one of the most knowledgeable, safe and professional charter captains on Cape Cod.

Starting in mid-May we will be running more group fishing trips, which typically occur each Friday morning throughout the season. In particular our group fishing trips during May and June have been a huge hit, with many 20-45 pound striped bass caught using live mackerel, live pogies, and a variety of topwater plugs and lures.

Here are the main benefits of our group trips:

Boat & Equipment

Captain Cullen runs a 2016 27' Conch, powered by a reliable Evinrude G2 300 outboard which cruises at a steady 30 knots. The 27' Conch is widely regarded as the finest center console fishing boat under 30', and is known for its dry, smooth ride. With its 9' beam, the Conch provides a steady and safe platform with ample amount of deck space for fishing.

On your group fishing trip you will be using top of the line equipment. All of Cullen's reels are brand new Penns, paired with custom-built rods. No cost is spared on the equipment provided, but you are free to bring your own equipment if desired.

Your Captain

Captain Cullen spent his childhood fishing alongside his father Mike, who is a longtime commercial fisherman here on Cape Cod. Cullen has been running his own boat now for over a decade, and has built his charter business based on his extensive knowledge of the waters surrounding Cape Cod and the Islands, and his natural ability to locate and catch fish.

Captain Cullen has navigated the entire Eastern Seaboard and fished the waters of Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Coastal New England extending out to the Gulf Stream.

When he is not running charters, Cullen is commercially fishing for a variety of fish species. Captain Cullen is on the water every fishable day from April through October, so he constantly knows where the fish are and what they are feeding on.

Cullen specializes in live bait fishing, which makes for very exciting action, and he is always up-to-date on all the most effective fishing techniques.Cullen is certified by the United States Coast Guard with his 100 ton Master's License.

Types Of Trips

Some of my favorite group trips of the entire season happen during the month of May. Typically Cullen "works the migration" by putting the crew ontop of the first biomasses of keeper-size fish of the year. Live mackerel is one of the top go-to baits.

Often during May the crews fish the many ledges, rock piles, rips and harbors of Buzzard's Bay, intercepting schools as they migrate north towards the canal. If the bass have already pushed through the canal, then Cullen will take the crew out into the expanse of Cape Cod Bay, to chase a unique early-season topwater bite that not many other boats and captains even know about.

Once June rolls around most trips depart before sunrise, en route to the backside of Cape Cod. During these trips you will cast plugs (or even flies) to packs of topwater stripers who attack with fierce aggression that needs to be witnessed in order to be believed.

Depending on the bite you may fish right off Provincetown, or travel south along Cape Cod's Great Beach, where you will fish among the most impressive backdrop and scenery on the Cape. Don't be surprised if you see humpback whales, minke whales and pilot whales along the way.

Prices range between $176 - $450 per person depending on the type of trip. For example, a 10 hour offshore tuna fishing trip is obviously going to cost more than a 5 hour inshore trip for stripers. This season we are going to offer a diverse range of fishing trips, from live-lining for stripers, to fly fishing, to fishing for albies and even bluefin tuna.

In addition, members of My Fishing Cape Cod can use a special code to receive significant discounts off the cost of our group fishing trips. Members will also get "first dibs" and will be able to register for these trips before registration opens to the general public.

How To Secure Your Spot

The only way to secure a spot onboard one of our group fishing trips is to be one of the first to register online. Typically these spots go quick, so you must act fast and secure your spot online as soon as registration opens.

This year online registration will open at 8AM on Saturday April 14th.

Members of My Fishing Cape Cod will be able to register first, before registration opens to the general public. Members of My Fishing Cape Cod will also receive significant discounts on the price of these trips.

If you are interested in joining one of our 2018 group fishing trips, then please click here and enter your email, and I will send you a reminder email when registration opens to ensure you don't miss out.

In conclusion, I feel we have a terrific fishing season in store for us this coming spring and summer, and our My Fishing Cape Cod group trips are just another way to help you make the absolute most of your time on the water.

Do you have any questions about the trips?

    • Hi Glenn ??

We have done mixed bag trips in the past, so maybe we can make that a reality again this year.

I will make sure to communicate via email over the coming weeks with updates about the types of trips we will be offering.

    • Thanks Ryan.

I’ve watched your videos re: spring togging from shore and have been doing map and article research re: the same.

How’s the access in May for an out of towner like me from Central MA?

I’m thinking the southern beaches first; opinion?

      • If you are able to go early or late in the day, especially during the week, then parking won’t be much of a problem.

I am not a tautog expert, but I have had success from shore targeting jetties in Buzzard’s Bay during the month of May ?

    • Hey Darry ?? It depends where the fish are.

In past trips Cullen has departed from Sesuit Harbor in Dennis, Taylor’s Point in Bourne, Bass River in Yarmouth, or Falmouth Harbor.

He keeps his boat on the trailer so he can go wherever the odds of having a successful trip are best.

Keep me posted with any other questions. Thanks!

  • Among the many benefits the site provides, this has to be one of the best! Thanks for organizing. Hopefully I can fit a trip in. TH
