Rhode Island Fishing Report: Mid-July Update

I had a feeling this was going to happen—I committed to Ryan that I would write a weekly report on the RI scene in the Rhode Island category of the MFCC forum. I knew I would start off great, but then things would get crazy and there would be long periods between reports. I'm nothing if not predictable. But hey, here it goes.

In this report I'll provide updates for...

  • Newport
  • Point Judith (Gansett)
  • Narragansett Bay
  • Block Island
  • Offshore Tuna

Newport: Big Fish Moving In

The first two weeks of July were absolutely outstanding in Newport waters. Big fish moved in just before the Fourth of July, and it was incredible fishing. We weren't dealing with massive hordes, but there were solid pockets of really good fish that made for some memorable trips.

Most of the action was concentrated down towards Elbow, which allowed us to stay away from the "only go to the reef crowd." Don't get me wrong—I truly love fishing the reef, it just gets a little crowded sometimes. I have picked quite a few nice fish from there lately, but having options is always better.

  • Hi Jay,
You said the North end was hot, but I’m assuming that’s from a boat. I’ve never fished block and I guess we decided to try. Without giving up a fishing spot any place from shore you can recommend that we can have access to that we could try?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Hi Jay,

Anything going on for surfcasting? I’m staying in Quonnie Central Beach starting the 19th for the week. No stranger to the area. Have fished the breachways and Point Judith at the lighthouse jetty. Thinking about trying Watch Hill Light and the Weekapaug Breachway. Any intel would be appreciated!
