Mid-June Report with Sam Mullen of Goose Hummock
June on Cape Cod has a way of announcing itself. The southwest winds with our early summertime pattern begin to settle in, the water temps climb toward comfortable, and after weeks of fish moving through in waves, the schools start to stack up and hold in place. That's exactly where we find ourselves right now, and if the latest report from Sam Mullen of the Goose Hummock Shop in Orleans is any indication, this is shaping up to be a very good summer for Cape Cod anglers.
Sam has reports covering the Cape Cod Canal, Barnstable Harbor, Monomoy, the south side bluefish bite, and black sea bass action in deeper water. Here's a full breakdown of what's happening out there.
Striped Bass: Migrating Fish Reaching All Areas
If you've been on the water or even just scrolling the MFCC forum, you already know the story: the big fish are here, and they're spread out. Sam confirmed what a lot of members have been reporting — the dominant fish in the schools right now are oversized, with relatively few schoolies mixed in. This has been the case for the better part of a month here on Cape Cod, although the past 7-10 days are featuring more information on pods of smaller fish finally moving in closer to shore.
In this report, Sam goes into detail on:
- Surfcasting reports from Cape Cod Bay, the backside facing beaches, and south side
- Following the massive squid bite last week, summertime southwest patterns taking hold
- Productive lures being used right now in the surf
- Boat reports from Monomoy
- Bluefish reports from the sounds pushing inward toward the south side facing beaches
- Black sea bass reports
