Following the Birds: Chasing Hard Tails off Chatham

by Rick Vandale

It was a beautiful morning on Nantucket Sound this past Monday September 22nd when we left the dock on Bass River in search of bonito and false albacore with MFCC group trip Captain Tyler Putney of Flatliner Charters. Accompanying me were my wife Marcy, fellow MFCC member Mike Laurie of Falmouth, and his good friend Fred Holland of Melrose.

We enjoyed a smooth and comfortable ride to the east side of Monomoy thanks to Tyler’s 28’ Whitewater which seemed to glide over the waves like a magic carpet. After a quick transit of about thirty minutes, it was time to start fishing!

Finding the Action

Things were pretty quiet when we first arrived with no birds or breaking fish in sight. That’s when Captain Tyler used his electronics, including radar, to identify groups of birds within a few miles radius of our location. We had to cruise around for a while to find the birds, but when we did, the group immediately hooked into several good-sized bluefish.
