Written Transcript

Well, next up on this week's edition of the My Fishing Cape Cod podcast is our good buddy Evan Eastman from down at Eastman Sport and Tackle in beautiful Falmouth, Massachusetts. Evan, how are you this week?

(26:10):
I'm doing great. Thanks Kevin. The weather's been really good. So, uh, been happy about that. How about yourself?

(26:16):
I'm doing very well. I'm on the way home. Should be back in Massachusetts hopefully by tomorrow night, Friday evening. So very excited about that. And, uh, I'm missing home Evan, so I'm, I'm relying on you and the other guys on the podcast here to fill me in on on what's going on. Let's start off with striped ass, that's what everybody wants to know. Well,

(26:36):
I'll just start from shore fishing and I've actually had some really good reports over the last week of guys fishing around Knobs, lighthouse and amongst the Rock. Um, a couple days ago I had a customer come in and reported a 50 inch fish that he caught around like 4 45 off of knobs, like on one of the rocks. He waited out a little bit on a um, al Gags whip deal and the olive color. So in addition to him, I've had a few other customers come in, you know, fishing off a surf drive, throwing ESY minnows, getting bass there, the mouth of Great Pond has had some bass. So you know, the bass fishing really is the best time is at night. Um, but it's been encouraging to hear there are still some good bass around from shore. Uh, I just gotta work a little bit harder and fish at night to get 'em.

(27:25):
Uh, boat fishing, you know, as you had mentioned it, it has slowed down on the south side of Falmouth mainly due to the water temperatures. But um, I did a trip on Tuesday. I wasn't necessarily targeting um, striped bass, but I did eventually meet up with a buddy who was fishing off a gay head and um, he got into some nice bass, some slot and over Slott bass that were mixed in with Blue Fish. So you know, there are around um, you know, I know that Monomoy is still got, is holding some nice bass right now still and um, you know, hearing some guys getting them in in Northern Buzzards Bay as well.

(28:01):
Well that's promising to hear that there's still guys especially being successful from shore. How about Blue Fish, Evan?

(28:09):
Yeah, I mean there's tons of blue fish around. Um, you know, I'll just kind of, before I get to that, just kind of talk about my trip on Tuesday. I decided, you know, my dad and I always will take about three or four trips to the Hooter. Was able to catch about eight or nine bonito at the Hooter trolling Deep Divers, uh, URIs and some X wraps. And that was the best fishing I've had with bonito at the Hooter in two or three years. So I was pretty excited about that. Um, after that I went to gay head in between, well it's gay head, um, in between gay head and, and Nomans and it was stacked with blue fish. Um, yeah, my buddy had had, he was headed to Nomans and then he ran into the birds there and so, you know, for three hours countless fish and I probably caught my personal best blue fish.

(28:59):
Um, it was about 37 and a half inches and I didn't weigh it, but it was roughly about 20 pounds. So it was a massive blue fish and there was tons out there and they were acting like alies, you know, there'd be birds and they'd be busting the surface, you know, boats would try to get cast into them busting, but you know, I was, anytime I got a cast in the vicinity of where they were and where the birds were, I was, I was hooking up uh, tossing a uh, one and a quarter ounce silver side epoxy gig. They seemed to uh, really love that. And you know, there's been good blue fishing from say gay head. I heard on the other side like pene, there's been a lot of blue fish over there. Um, in Vineyard sound in some of the rips there's been blue fish.

(29:41):
It seems like a lot of those big pods of blue fish have pushed south to that, you know, cu honk Pene gay head area. Um, and then I had heard also I had a friend who ran to the Hooter a couple days before me and he got into some big pods of blue fish on the other side of the vineyard, um, like around the Cape Hogue area. So no shortage of blue Fish. Um, now that I think of it, I've also talked to some people who have been fishing horseshoe shoal in Nantucket sound and been getting them casting and trolling them up there as well. So, you know, for me personally right now I'm focusing on out, uh, bonito blue fish and then just waiting for the Alves to show up. Um, 'cause right now the best fishing it has slowed down a bit.

(30:25):
Well that's very promising to hear. There's that many blue fish. Evan gonna ask you too about that fight on that big boy, that must've been quite the tug.

(30:33):
Oh yeah, yeah, it, it, you know, if I didn't know what I was, you know, was on the other line, I would've thought it was, you know, a 60 <laugh>, 60 inch striped ass. I mean pound for pound blue fish really fight arguably the hardest of any inshore fish. So that was, uh, it was a, it was a lot of fun. Sure. My, my shoulders and the arms were tired after that one for sure.

(30:57):
That sounds like a great day. And, and you mentioned the funny fish have arrived, uh, there's some bonito in the areas. You mentioned out at the Hooter that they're small, but wouldn't you take that as a promising sign here, uh, in the end of July?

(31:10):
I would say so for sure. I mean I think that's an indication there's a lot of beta around. Um, it's getting, I think it's gonna get continued to get pushed in shore. My hope is that there's some bigger Benito following these smaller ones. And then, you know, within, I'm hoping within a week or so, some bigger ones are at the Hooter and maybe some of those smaller ones push and shore. Um, 'cause we had a really good inshore alb bite 20 19, 20 20 and then it kind of died off the last few years. So, um, I'm hoping that they, uh, there's a big a more of a push of 'em coming through soon.

(31:44):
And in terms of offshore Evan, uh, what are you hearing about bluefin tuna? It seems like, from what I'm getting in terms of texts from folks at home that the bite is still relatively strong, uh, with recreational and giants around our waters.

(31:58):
Yeah, yeah, the um, it seems like the dump, uh, has slowed down a bit. I've actually had better reports from guys who've been fishing tuna ridge than the dump over the last week or so. Um, I've had a couple of boats jig up some really nice bluefin at Tuna Ridge over the last couple days. Um, and you know, I was, I'm a little surprised to see the dump slow down. I've had a couple buddies who've trolled around like the northeast corner to the southeast corner and then decided just to push farther to the, to the lanes. Um, there've been some yellowfin in the lanes and some, a few mahi, but a lot of those Yellowfin and mahi are down, uh, off the canyons. Uh, like a ve for example, I had heard was loaded with some fish. Um, I think so a lot of these school bluefin are, are starting to push east. Um, I think we're gonna see some more rec sized fish, um, east of Chatham at like crab ledge. Um, but you know, certainly some giants east to sort an even farther east than that. I think, um, that, that whole stretch has giants and you know, I haven't got a ton of real good reports but wreck size bluefin. But um, you know, I think that uh, as the water temperature warms up, I think they're gonna be pushing north and east. So we'll see where those wreck bluefin end up here in the next couple days.

(33:18):
And the last thing I wanted to ask you about Evan is I haven't been home in so long, what's going on in the store? Anything good going on? Anything new? Anything that everyone's talking about?

(33:27):
You know, right now, uh, it seems like most people are are going offshore, so, you know, I've been selling a lot of jigs that seems to be really the most effective way both south and east of getting fish. So just a lot of guys looking to jig, uh, they're selling a good amount of bars, some sidetracking bars as well. Um, so you know, in addition to that I'm, I'm excited about the bonito. Like I said, we haven't seen any really around here in a couple years, so, um, got plenty of deep divers, been using the ozer ones and um, so yeah, so you know, as we transition from July to August and the water temperature warms up, you know, it's kind of focusing on blue fish, you know, offshore and then, uh, you know, venito and then, you know, soon enough I think the Alves are gonna be here probably earlier than we have seen in the last couple years. So, um, getting geared up for that as well.

(34:24):
Awesome. Evan, thanks so much for taking some time outta your week to check in with us here on the podcast and I can guarantee you next time we chat I'll be back on Cape. So looking forward to that.

(34:34):
Alright, thanks Kevin. Safe travels man. Hope you, uh, get home soon.

(34:38):
Well, my thanks to Evan Eastman of Eastman Sport and tackle for taking time outta his day to join us here on the My Fishing Cape Cod podcast. And I want to thank everybody for tuning in and all of our guests that join me as well on today's program. Started off with M F C C, founder and creator Ryan Collins, Sam Mullen of the Goose Hummock, Bruno Demeer from Cape and Islands Mitsubishi. And last but not least, you just heard from Ebo Eastman of Eastman Sport and Tackle. That's gonna put the wraps on our final July edition of the podcast. It's scary to see how quick the summer moves. We're gonna be already into August next week when the podcast comes at you next Friday. So hopefully the rest of the summer doesn't fly by too quickly, but still plenty of quality fishing days ahead. We've still got a strong striper bite.

(35:29):
Bluefish are here in large numbers. Fluke are really in, in Nantucket sound monomoy is popping off. The bluefin tuna bite for both recreational fish and giants still remain strong. So tons of good things to look forward to as we push toward the fall run, including Funny Fish as well that we just hit on with Evan. So plenty of good stuff on the horizon for us here on the My Fishing Cape Cod podcast. Sure. Hope all of you enjoyed today's show and until we chat again next week, I'm your host Kevin Collins, signing off tight lines and take care.
