Fly Fishing Cape Cod for Trout with “Pirate”

With whispers coming through the proverbial fishing grapevines that the stocking trucks had begun their semiannual pilgrimage to the various kettle ponds on and off the Cape, I immediately began concocting plans to make my way down to one of these ponds with the fly rod, even if it meant breaking through a thin layer of ice to do so.

The plan (formulated the previous night via text with a buddy named Pirate-and cemented after a few or five IPA’s) was to ignore the weather report calling for subfreezing temps, less than ideal winds, and a consistent snowfall, put on the waders, and “maybe just make a few casts at the pond down the road.”

Fishing With My Fiance

It took some time, but I finally convinced my fiancé, Gelany, to join me for a morning of fishing.

No, we didn’t catch the pre-dawn bite. We didn’t even get the dawn bite. However, we did have lines in the water at a respectable 6:30AM.

However she still commented that 6:30am was too early, even though by this time on a normal fishing day I’d be just about ready to eat lunch. Nevertheless I was excited at the prospect of having her fishing by my side.

Bass On Top & Breaking The Curse

​It was a silent morning and the harbor was very quiet. I started the outboard of the Mal de Mer, and I was off the mooring before sunrise.

I made my way between other moorings and seagulls perched on the roofs of lobster boats, towards the dock where my Dad was waiting.

I picked my Dad up at what was formerly the flotilla in Plymouth Harbor, but is now the skiff dock, due to this year's endless construction projects.

The flotilla was overcrowded with skiffs, so I had to nose the boat into a small opening so I didn’t crush my lower units. Surprisingly I did no damage to any boats or the dock.
