Timing and Technique Make the Difference
The Cape Cod Canal continues to produce quality striped bass, though consistency remains the key challenge. Recent reports indicate that 40+ inch bass are moving through the canal, with a concentration of fish at the wend end.
Prime Time Tactics
The most productive approach requires a commitment to optimal timing. Early morning, particularly around first light, has been delivering the best results at the canal. Overnight fishing has also proven effective for dedicated anglers willing to put in the time when recreational pressure is minimal.
Jig Selection Strategy: Metal jigs are currently outperforming topwater presentations. The bass are actively feeding on mackerel, making baitfish-imitating jigs the preferred choice. A 3-ounce crippled herring pattern cuts through the water effectively while maintaining bottom contact, allowing anglers to feel structure and present the lure with proper action through simple jigging motions.
Topwater Considerations: While fish have been spotted blitzing on mackerel at the surface, topwater lures have been inconsistent. Anglers should be prepared with poppers and surface plugs but shouldn't rely solely on this presentation.
Cape Cod Bay: The Destination for Large Stripers
Cape Cod Bay is currently producing the most consistent action for quality striped bass, with fish in the high 40-inch range being caught from both boat and shore. The recent sustained north-northeast winds have pushed significant numbers of fish into the bay, creating excellent opportunities as evidence by MFCC Member and Red Top employee Mike Remlinger's nearly 50-inch bass this week from shore...
