Cape Cod Surfcasting Report | Monday July 1

Ryan Collins

Saturday night myself and 3 members of My Fishing Cape Cod encountered consistent action with stripers on almost every cast!

I also thought we would eventually find some "keeper size" striped bass, however getting into big fish from shore is never a sure bet.

Regardless we still had a ton of fun! The thunderstorms didn't bother us, and we were treated to a gorgeous night of surfcasting in this general area of Cape Cod.

Sunset Topwater Action

The Cape was hit with several thunderstorms this past weekend, and I wasn't sure if we'd be able to safely fish the beach.

When fishing from shore I don't mind rain and wind, but I don't mess around with lightning. Fortunately by 6pm Saturday evening the skies had cleared.

By 7pm we could see the storms as they passed by a safe distance to the north. That is just about the same time we began hooking up with fish!

MFCC member Chris Kline (pictured above) was one of the first to hook up. His choice of lure was working well, and I got a kick out of watching bass as they came up to the surface to attack the plug.

Soon everyone else followed suit and changed to similar style plugs and began catching as well.

Myself, John, Mario and Chris enjoyed a fun sunset topwater bite, with great action on stripers up to 26 inches.

The Night Bite

The sunset this past Saturday evening was awesome, with lots of oranges and pinks streaking across the clouds.

Once it got dark we switched techniques and began casting this old reliable lure which works great along pretty much any Cape beach at night.

From 10pm-1am we caught plenty more stripers by using that lure, fished by using this super simple technique which anyone can learn after just an hour or two of practice.

For example, it didn't take long for MFCC member Mario Signore (pictured above) to get a good handle on the technique and start catching fish.

Mario as well as myself, John and Chris enjoyed great action right until we decided to call it a trip around 1am.

If you would like to learn more about the techniques and tackle, as well as the general area of Cape Cod fished during this trip, then please check out my Extended Fishing Report.

Good luck this week if you make it out fishing! The weather looks wonderful, and I hope you are able to enjoy an awesome Fourth of July holiday!
