2023 Striped Bass & Bluefish Personal Bests: From the Surf

Today I wanted to share this post because we have some really cool things going on inside our forum. One of the best threads I've noticed recently is all about personal bests for striped bass and bluefish from shore for the 2023 season. The thread was started last week by longtime MFCC member Mike Marcus.

Now, there's still time left in the 2023 season, but we are winding down, that's for sure. So let's take a look back and view some of these awesome catches that were shared this past week by our members inside the My Fishing Cape Cod forum.

Ben Mahanna

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2018

Right off the bat we've got this catch from Ben Mahanna. Ben has been a member of My Fishing Cape Cod for the past 5 years now and I've had the pleasure of fishing with him on several occasions.

Ben caught this beautiful bass from shore in Cape Cod Bay.

Calvin Toran-Sandlin

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2022

Then of course we have Calvin Toran-Sandlin. If you've been following My fishing Cape Cod for any amount of time, then you know that Calvin fishes hard.

This week he posted some amazing fish that he caught starting with some huge holdovers from March and April. So those are holdover bass. Once we got into May Calvin started sharing some absolute slobs in his posts inside our forum.

He also shared information throughout the 2023 season on a special podcast that we did with him every two weeks. You can listen to his latest podcast about targeting the final push of big stripers by clicking here.

Anthony Besaw

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2017

Moving on down through the Personal Bests forum thread, we have longtime member Anthony Besaw. According to Anthony...

"I didn’t catch any PB stripers this season, but I got a lot of nice healthy fish. I did get a PB shore based bluefish. I try to avoid them so I don’t really catch a lot of them, but it’s inevitable as you all know. I forget the exact length but it was over 35”

Marshall Roy

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2022

Marshall Roy caught his personal best sandbar sharks (also called brown sharks) this past summer. I still find it amazing how it's possible to catch these sharks from shore on Cape Cod!

Carol Girard-Irwin

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2017

Carol Girard Irwin, who fishes the Outer Cape a lot, caught her first over 40 inch bass from shore, as well as many "gator" bluefish from the ocean facing beaches.

Tom MacInnes

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2019

Tom MacInnes got his personal best from the beach this year. Congratulations Tom and awesome night photo in the waves!

Carl Leitao

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2016

Carl has been a member for a very long time. Despite it being almost November, he's still planning on doing a lot of fishing, and wanted to remind everyone that the season's not over yet!

Here's his best striper and best bluefish from shore in 2023.

Scott Silver

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2015

According to Scott Silver...

"Not my best of the year (or even best of that night), but maybe my personal best night of surfcasting. My gosh are we lucky to be able to do this…"

This was Scott's best night of the year, and I also remember that incredible bite that many folks from MFCC experienced this past summer on the Outer Cape Beaches.

Steven Moniz

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2020

Steven Moniz has had a remarkable year. I've been following his posts inside the forum and he's been fishing from Provincetown to the Canal. He got a lot of fish over 40 inches.

I think a lot of the success that many of our members are having is due to, well, they fish hard, but also that they're communicating with one another here inside the forum.

A lot of people are helping each other out, which is really great to see.

Matt Murphy

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2018

Matt Murphy has had his best fall in a few years after being too busy to fish all summer.

That's awesome Matt! Glad to see you're back at it and posting again inside the forum.

Robbie Sturtevant

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2021

Robbie Sturtevant, my goodness, we don't know exactly how big this fish was, but Rob is six foot three, 200 pounds. So that kind of gives you an idea of just how big this striper is.

According to Rob...

"This year produced a few “PB” fish, but only because I've only ever caught these species once - my first brown shark AND my first BFT ever (on spin).

But heres the real MVP. No weight or measurement but this was undoubtedly the biggest striped bass I have ever held. Keep in mind - I'm 6’3" 200 lbs. I'll never forget that fish right there!"

Mike Marcus

  • Member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2017

Mike Marcus is pictured here with his best fish of the season, caught on the Outer Cape back in July during the incredible beach bite that many of our members were fortunate to experience.

Mike is the member who originally started this "personal best" inside our forum, so thank you very much Mike for taking the initiative and getting this going. 🙌🏻

In Conclusion

Thanks for checking out this post! I hope you have a great rest of your day.

The fall season isn't over yet, and we still have a lot of cool stuff to look forward to, including a lot of great freshwater fishing here on Cape Cod.

We have some amazing threads inside our forum for freshwater fishing (like our Trout Time thread) so be sure to check that out too.

Tight lines! 🎣

I'm fortunate to have grown up on the beach, and I've been fishing since kindergarten. I have great family, friends and fishing experiences to be thankful for. Just being out there is enough-catching fish is just a bonus!

  • Love seeing pictures of the catches. Never fished the Cape. Started in Fl 5 years ago, surf fishing. Personal best: 40” Red Fish from Intercoastal Dock. Keep on Fishing!

    • I’ve enjoyed sharing some tides with Ryan. Unfortunately these fish are few and far between with many empy tides, white light has to be strictly controlled and surf+wetsuiting boulders makes filming a tricky prospect.

  • I had the most remarkable season! Did not max my best of 49”, but did catch hundreds of fish. This year brought the most 40” plus fish I have ever caught! Both in the canal and on the new beaches I have discovered thanks to many of you!! Tight lines all! 🎣🎣🎣

  • Impressive, to say the least.
I truly had a pretty epic season this year. I did lose about 6 weeks in the heat of the summer with my business but made up for it this fall. I’m very fortunate and have put myself in a lot of great areas to be in the right place at the right time. I have caught hundreds of bass this year. Mainly being schoolies. I’ve experienced great action from the surf, fishing from my canoe, and of course from my beloved vessel. I did however manage a couple of nice catches this year that really stick with me. You know, the kind of drag screaming you could hear in your head during some of the coldest days of the winter.
