Fishing Guppy Pencil Poppers @ the Cape Cod Canal

Ryan Collins

The fog was thick as I cast my Guppy pencil popper at the Cape Cod Canal. I heard stripers crushing bait on the surface moments before my Guppy got inhaled.

I could not see a thing, but the audio effects were terrific. Large pops and smacks from bass crushing mackerel and peanut bunker echoed through the mist.

In this post I would like to share with you a video preview of the pencil popper action I was fortunate to encounter during my latest trip to the Cape Cod Canal.

  • Ryan what was the model of the 10000 Shimano Ultegra the composit, graphite or the aluminum one ? Is that the oscillating one and how good does it perform? The lami rod 101/2 up to 6oz the model # itself of the blank and all one piece and was it rated as a medium. Thankyou (

    • Hey David ??

      Good to hear from you!

I just checked Canal Bait & Tackle and it looks like they no longer carry the exact model Shimano Ultegra that I was using in this video. However, they do have a very similar model for $209 which you can view here http://www.canalbaitandtackle.com/shimano-ultegra-14000xtd-ult14000xtd/

I have been very happy with this reel, especially at that price point of $209. It casts incredibly well and can apply upwards of 40 pounds of drag pressure which is ridiculous. It is definitely a great reel for topwater plugging, and I have also used it for jigging.

The 10.5 foot Lamiglas is from Red Top in Buzzard’s Bay, it is a one piece rod but unfortunately there is no model number printed on the rod. The rod is 15 years old so I am sure they probably have a newer 10.5 model rated for up to 6 ounces that would work just as well.

However, the guys at Canal Bait could probably pair you with a Shimano long cast rod that is made specifically for the Ultegra reel. By pairing the Shimano long cast rod with the Ultegra, you will be launching poppers farther than you thought possible. Seriously those reels and rods cast missiles.

  • The video on fishing Guppy Pencils in the download section is spectacular! Great camera work, footage and editing. I believe I saw a familiar image in the distance of some of the clips. Do I get a royalty?
