My Father-Son Martha’s Vineyard Derby Experience

The 2017 Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby was a special one for me. During the derby I had the opportunity to spend time on the water with my son, and pass down my fishing knowledge.

I actually caught my first striped bass during the 2016 season. Since then I've been fortunate to land many more of these beautiful fish.

As the start of the 2017 derby approached, I was eager to put my one year's worth of striper fishing experience to the test. Don't get me wrong, I'm still "green" as can be when it comes to saltwater fishing. My friends at the local bait and tackle shop can attest to that!

I’ve met some great people in a short period of time who have helped guide me along the way, and I am forever grateful for their knowledge. In particular, without the help of Dr. George DeFranca, I might still be chasing my first striper.

  • This is great! What’s better than fishing with your kid?? Videos are fantastic.

Easily my favorite part of the write up is you calling the guy in on the kayak while wearing your uniform. You can imagine the guy must have been like “what the heck did I do?” Then you hit him up for fishing advice. Just classic!!

    • I owe my first and subsequent Stripers all to Dr. George. I’m just glad that he was willing to share his secrets with me. It’s something I value and am willing to share with others as well. Thank you for the feedback.

    • Those schoolies will be rolling in soon. I hope that you will share your son’s first catch with us as I love to live through the excitement of others. Fish Strong!!!!
