Friday October 6 Tautog Trip (and maybe some albies)

by Ryan Collins

October has arrived which means it's time to target tautog, which are perhaps the Cape's hardest fighting inshore fish!

This Friday we're offering a My Fishing Cape Cod tautog adventure with captain Tyler Putney of Flatliner Charters. This trip will last approximately 5 hours. Tautog is the primary target, but if the "fish gods" cooperate, then those onboard will also get a chance at catching some false albacore.

I'm bringing my wife to Logan Airport Friday morning so unfortunately I won't be onboard, but I know anyone who signs up will have a great time without me. Captain Tyler is terrific and tautog are fun to catch and amazing to eat.

Please click here to reserve your spot onboard. The maximum number of anglers for this trip is 5 and we'll need at least 3 people to sign up in order for the trip to sail.

Here are the details:

  • Price: $230/person
  • Max number of anglers: 5 (plus captain Tyler)
  • Trip length: 5 hours
  • Trip time: Around sunrise (exact time will be emailed to you 24hrs in advance)
  • Port of departure: Taylor's Point in Bourne or Falmouth Harbor (subject to change based on weather)
  • Area fished: Buzzard's Bay or Elizabeth Islands
  • Techniques used: anchoring over rock piles, fishing with light spinning rods and jigs tipped with green crabs
  • Gear and tackle will be provided
  • Please dress warm and wear sturdy sneakers or boots

*Please know the trip will sail in less than ideal weather conditions, but that you will not go out if the weather is unsafe. If the trip is cancelled due to weather, then you will receive a refund. Please understand that due to the logistics of organizing these trips, we are not able to offer refunds if you cancel your reservation less than one week in advance, or if you do not show up the morning of your trip.

Thanks for setting this up. I had a great day with Tyler.

I hooked 2 albies and landed one. The tog bite was spotty, and I respect and appreciate how hard Tyler worked to get us on fish. We went from Bourne to Falmouth, then out towards Cleveland Ledge, then back to Falmouth, through Woods Hole over to the Vineyard, then back along the Elizabeth Islands and through Robinison's where we got into stripers, blues and black sea bass on the Buzzards Bay side of the Elizabeth Islands. We caught lots of blues which is always fun. My wife and I cooked and enjoyed them that night, and made a bunch of bluefish cakes for later.

Thank you very much for setting up the charter with captain Tyler this past week.

I’ve been after an up north albie for 6 years, having only successfully landed a couple Spanish mackerel in my home waters of south dartmouth. I was extremely pleased to see the tie job on my 15lb leader held up catching several fish on my own rig.

Everyone was happy with the trip.

Just wanted to give you an update on today's trip with Tyler. I'm glad we got a chance to get out there with the threat of thunderstorms today. We ending up chasing pogie schools. Then snagging/live lining  them and also fishing dead pogies. Both methods worked and we ended up catching around 10-12 fish overall. All of them slot or larger. The biggest was 37 1/2". Everyone was happy with the trip. Good day considering Tyler had to adjust his plans due to the weather. Hoping to get out there on another trip this year if more are added.

It was a wonderful trip.

Met 2 other MFCC members and topped my previous personal best 2 times with the largest measuring 38”. Great day.

We had a really good crew and the captain was great.

It was insane. I personally caught 26 fish. Just an epic day.

Tyler was fantastic and kept us on the fish from start to finish!

Hi Ryan - Just wanted to let you know that we had a truly awesome trip with Tyler. The top water bite was incredible and we caught so many stripers we lost count 🙂 At one point all four of us were hooked up. Emma really had a blast on her first charter. Please thank Tyler for making this trip so memorable!

I'm fortunate to have grown up on the beach, and I've been fishing since kindergarten. I have great family, friends and fishing experiences to be thankful for. Just being out there is enough-catching fish is just a bonus!
