Fly Fishing the Flats of Cape Cod Bay (and much more)

The month of June has arrived on Cape Cod. Summertime and the best weather of the year is just around the corner.

Whether you fish everyday or just occasionally, right now is an exciting time to be on the water, at the beach, or along the banks of the canal.

In today's report, I would like to recap some of the fishing I've done, and some of the places I've visited, over the past few days and weeks.

Fly Fishing The Flats Of Cape Cod Bay

Over the next couple of weeks I would expect the fishing inside Cape Cod Bay to steadily improve. Aside from good fishing, the bay is home to some of the world's most expansive flats.

So far this spring I have used my 12 foot aluminum boat to access remote sections of these vast sandbars.

During low tide these sandbars stretch for miles, providing shorebirds, striped bass, and countless other species with good habitat and feeding areas.

The view can also be spectacular. ?

10 days ago I met up with Ian Bragdon from the Goose Hummock Shop for a morning of fly fishing the flats. It was dead low tide when we began, which provided us with miles of sandy solitude.

Ian would be casting a sinking line to help him get his fly down deep in the current.  He used a variety of different homemade tied flies, and I'm happy to report that they all seemed to work very well.

During this trip Ian caught stripers from micro-size all the way up to 25 inches. It's been mostly small fish so far this spring on the flats of Cape Cod Bay, but I would expect that to change any day now.

Bottom Fishing

Lots of members from My Fishing Cape Cod have been cashing in on the Cape's spectacular spring bottom fishing action.

Tautog, flounder and sea bass are now being caught inside Cape Cod Bay, with the same species plus scup available inside Buzzard's Bay, Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound.

I was able to do more bottom fishing this May than usual, and I've already posted quite a few entries about what I've been finding. You can check out my reports below. ?

Of course my most fun day of bottom fishing was this past Tuesday May 26th in Buzzard's Bay with my wife Lauren onboard our 12 foot Lund aluminum.

Obviously you need to pick you days and only head out in a small boat when the weather allows. The water is also still very cold so be sure to wear your lifejacket.

Marconi Beach & The Atlantic White Cedar Swamp

One of the great benefits of fishing is time spent in nature. For me, fishing is often just an excuse to get outside and go exploring.

Fortunately on Cape Cod we are blessed with many conservation areas and wild lands. Of course the Cape's most well-known conservation area is the National Seashore.

Recently I made a trip to Marconi Beach in Wellfleet, which is within the confines of Cape Cod's National Seashore.

This wild unbroken stretch of surf is always worth the drive to see.

Located behind the cliffs of Marconi, and situated in a valley in the woods, is one of Cape Cod's most unique and rare ecosystems - the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp.

Walking through the swamp is a fairy tale experience right out of Harry Potter or the Lord of the Rings.

If you've never visited the swamp or Marconi Beach, then I recommend checking it out during your next fishing trip down Cape. ✌?

I may not of caught any fish on this particular trip to the National Seashore, but I did leave feeling refreshed and relaxed. The peace and quiet of Cape Cod's outermost shores is always worth the trip.

Thousands of Schoolies

This past Thursday's group fishing trip was with captain Cullen of Cape Star Charters. Onboard we had MFCC members Aaron Permlutter, Darren Jacobs and Vinnie Freudenberger.

Each year I try to organize as many group fishing trips as possible to help give MFCC members a chance to experience some of the best fishing Cape Cod has to offer, at an affordable per person rate.

During this trip we fished throughout Vineyard Sound, looking for birds using radar. Some of the birds and bass were feeding over wide open areas, while others were concentrated in the rips.

The birds and the bass were feeding on what appeared to be baby sea herring. It was a lot of fun watching stripers as they "slurped down" 3 inch sea herring right off the surface.

However, the fish were surprisingly finicky and difficult to fool. With so many stripers on the surface you would have thought any topwater plug would've worked, but we had our best luck using pink epoxy jigs.

You can watch a quick preview of the action by clicking play below. ?

As always I had fun fishing with Darren, Vinnie, Aaron and Cullen, and I'm looking forward to our next group fishing trip this Thursday June 4th.

If you're interested in joining a trip this year, then please keep tabs on our group trip forum where I will be posting future openings.

In Conclusion

Time flies and I can't believe the month of June is here. Historically, June has been a great month for striper fishing and I would expect more big bass to filter into the area with each passing day. It's been mostly small stripers so far but I'd expect that to change soon.

Cape Cod also has much more to offer aside from stripers. Bottom fishing can be a lot of fun, plus freshwater fishing is still going well. Good luck if you had out fishing this week, be courteous and be safe.

And if there is anything I can help with, then please feel free to contact me by sending me a message, commenting below, or by making a post inside our forum.

  • Great report Ryan! Incredible drone shots of The Flats. We fished the flats last week and had a perfect day! It’s “dream like” out there! Over 30 fish caught and released. Marconi beach is one of our family favorites! I have walked the Cedar Swamp trail many times! Cape Cod offers so much! Love it! Thanks for a great job.

  • Thanks for the report Ryan. June 1st is when I caught my biggest Striper to date back in 2018 with you and Ron… 44.5”. While I’m not getting out there today, I will be on CCB later this week. Tight lines and stay healthy all.
