Here on My Fishing Cape Cod I like to feature the work of MFCC members whenever possible.

Today I want to share with you a 1,600 word PDF document created by MFCC member Michael Mathias.

Mike has been a member of the website since February of 2015, and I am pumped to have him onboard My Fishing Cape Cod.

Mike is an experienced fly fisherman who created this piece for us about fly fishing the Connecticut River last year. During the warm-weather months, Mike pursues stripers, steelhead and other species throughout New England.

However during the winter, Mike packs his bags and heads south to Florida, where he fly fishes from a boat and from his kayak, for snook, redfish, sea trout and many other species.

Fly Fishing Tampa Bay During The Winter

As mentioned earlier in this post, Mike has created a 1,600 word PDF document for us, highlighting what it is like to fly fish during the winter in the Tampa Bay region of Florida.

You can download your copy by clicking below:

*This is a complimentary download and will not count against your MFCC University downloads.

Within this PDF you will learn about the areas in Tampa Bay where Mike targets redfish, trout, snook and other species.

Mike also shares his experiences and fly tackle for kayak and boat fishing throughout Cockroach Bay and the Aneclote River.

Nice work Mike with this contribution!

I look forward to seeing what other pieces of content My Fishing Cape Cod members will create, as we move through the cold winter months here on Cape Cod and abroad.

Tight lines!

What do you think?

  • Hi Mike! Enjoyed your report very much, I also hope your wife is doing better, I will pray for her. Hope you guys will be able to go down to Florida soon.

I’m planning to visit the Fort Myer area in April, wondering if you could make an recommendations for fishing, other than hiring a guide? Looking to do a little shore fishing, pier maybe..any suggestions much appreciated . thanks GeorgeM

I would take a ride over to Sanibel and go to Norm Zeiglers fly shop. I am sure he can steer you in the right direction. I will be fly fishing the Sanibel beaches for snook in June, for the first time, but I know little about other fishing there. There is a fishing pier at the south end of Sanibel. Thanks for the thoughts.

  • Let me say this. Since I wrote this report, I have not been able to return to Florida due to my wife’s illness, so my advise to all of you is to do what you want to do today, as no one knows what the future will bring, especially as you get older. Life is just too short to delay anything. We were lucky to have spent 4 winters in Fla. and still have hopes of doing it again, as soon as we figure out whats wrong with the wife. Thanks for the positive comments.

    • its a great article mike…but it so strange to leave a message to Michael mathias…the same exact name I have…I live in fall river, ma…and do fish up the cape looking to catch those strippers….I cant believe that you have the same name I’m 65 years old….would love to hear about you and your family,,,wondering if we are related….again great article..

I originally came from Dartmouth, Ma., born and brought up there. Dad came from family in New Bedford. I am 73 years old. If you are a member here you can PM me, if not I’m not sure how you posted here. You can contact me by e mail, but I am not sure that I can post it here. Hey Ryan is there a way I can communicate with Michael A. without breaking any rules. If so, please let me know.

  • Thanks for a great report Mike! Betsy and I were in Tampa on a business trip this November. I was amazed to see the huge schools of anchovies or sardines or mullet swimming in the canals next to our hotel. Then the really cool part was when groups of Bluefish would chase the baitfish all over the canal.
