Surfcasting Cape Cod’s National Seashore | October 12th Report

The "shoulder seasons" are my favorite times to go surfcasting on the beaches of Cape Cod's National Seashore.

The crowds have dissipated, leaving me all alone on the beach with just the bass, birds, seals and coyotes.

Yesterday I arrived in Truro with my lovely wife Lauren for a day of exploring and fishing the unspoiled beaches of the National Seashore. Prior to the trip I contacted My Fishing Cape Cod member Dave Frennesson, who regularly rents his Truro cottage to fishermen and vacationers.

You might remember this cottage from back in the spring, when I coined it the Truro Fish House after a successful 4 day and 3 night stay.

Lauren and I arrived at Dave's cottage around 3PM. We quickly unpacked and headed down the road to Great Hollow Beach, which is about one quarter of a mile from the cottage.

Cape Cod Bay was glistening in the afternoon sun as Lauren and I began our walk south along the beach. The tide was incoming and there were birds working about one quarter of a mile offshore.

Despite the positive signs of life, I was not really "feeling" the spot. Something told me we should hustle back to my car and make a move to another nearby spot before sunset.

  • Head of the Meadow has always been one of my favorites, day or night. Beautiful and wild place to fish. Have very seldom been let down by fishing there. Is that old 50’s vintage beach buggy still stuck in the wash there ?
