An Unforgettable Bass Blitz | June 30 Report

Yesterday MFCC member Matt Bach and I experienced an unforgettable day of fishing on my boat. This guest report written by Matt recaps our experience. Thank you Matt - we are happy to have you contributing to MFCC!

Checking my emails finally paid off! Around 3 o’clock on Sunday I received an email from Ryan Collins, saying that he had an open spot on his boat for a trip early Monday morning. I responded immediately and secured the spot.

Next thing I know it’s 1 AM on Monday and my alarm clock is going off. Usually I’d hit the snooze button, and try to squeeze in 15 more minutes of sleep, but this was definitely not one of those times. Within 20 minutes I was on route 3 headed to meet Ryan at the boat launch.

On The "Hunt"

When Ryan arrived we launched his boat and were off. After a bit of a cruise we arrived in a "fishy" looking area and saw several boats hooked up while live lining mackerel.

After a few casts at that spot with no luck Ryan decided to move to another spot, and then another, and then another. We continued casting and eventually Ryan hooked up with a schoolie.

This would end up being the smallest fish of the day-by far!

Ryan then landed another fish, which was around 32”. Shortly after that my rod bent and I had a fish on. Once I got the fish in the boat I measured her to be 35 inches!

Not bad for my first fish of the day. The "hunt" was beginning to pay off.

After we each caught another 2 fish in the mid 30 inch range we decided to continue our hunt in search of bigger fish.

That was when we noticed the birds working on the horizon, far off in the distance.

Birds Working + Bass Busting

Once we reached the birds we realized we had hit the jackpot. The birds were diving fast and furious.

There were stripers "boiling" everywhere!

The school of bass had to span at least one mile in length, and they were all nice sized fish.

For the next 2+ hours we caught a 35”-42” bass on nearly every cast we made.

We stayed on the school by following the birds.

We caught so many fish that we lost count!

They hit everything that was thrown at them. It was almost like a bluefish blitz, but with 25+ pound stripers. Ryan got some great video footage from today which he'll share here on MFCC tomorrow.

We were pretty worn out after following the epic bite for several miles. My arms felt like I had been jigging the canal all day!

At that point we decided to call it a day and head back to the ramp.

The whole ride back to the boat launch Ryan and I talked about how crazy the bite was, and how it didn’t even seem real.

Before this trip I had only seen videos on YouTube of bass blitzing like that. Little did I know when I woke up at 1am, that today would be one of those days you dream about...

  • Great fishing Matt and Ryan. Look likes you guys had good times.

Thanks for the great report, Matt. You sure know how to make us go crazy with all the teasers ;). Now I’m drooling.

    Ryan,
Keep me posted for the next trip. Can you email me the trip rate and details please?

    • Hey Alberto, there is no cost for the trips with me on my boat. Group MFCC fishing trips with Cullen from Cape Star Charters usually cost between $125 – $200.

I agree with you that Matt wrote up a great report. Hope to have him contribute more in the future for sure.

    • Thanks dirtyoar, hopefully this isn’t the only school like that, I get into this year. I’d have to say this has been the most productive year striper fishing I’ve ever had. Hopefully it is the same for you!

  • Hey Matt

Sounds like you’re now a confirmed “hooked on MFCC” member. Might I ask how you heard about Ryan and his great MFCC in the first place.
I came across MFCC right after I had moved from Cape Cod down to the Dominican Republic. Through email, Ryan and I have become good friends. This past winter Ryan mentioned that he wanted to take MFCC to the next level. I gave him my thoughts on how he might do this. Many of these have been incorporated, and Ryan has been seeing the results.

Good luck to you. My only wish was that I had come across MFCC sooner. It certainly would have resulted in a lot less frustration in my Cape fishing, especially in the Canal.

    • Hey Doug, I actually found out about MFCC through a friend that lives in Chatham. I was looking for advice to fish the canal as I only fished it a few times before this year. After reading every article and report on the canal I thought I had a good idea on how the canal works. This year I’ve pulled over 30 25#+ fish from the canal already and I’ve only been four times. So I’d say this site has helped me a lot with learning about the canal.
Ryan is a great guy, and his website is a friendly place for anglers to share their experience and to also learn from others. You can definitely say I’m addicted to MFCC.

      • I gotta say i did the same i read all the articals asked sum questions then finally started catching big fish in the canal so thanks again to Ryan collins for creating the site Im also very addicted if im not fishing im reading this site

        • Ryan has layed the ground work on how to fish the canal. Pretty easy for someone to pick it up if they read the articles. Also the forum has helped a lot.I knew I wasn’t the only one who severely benefited from Ryan’s articles. With the up to date reports on the forum, and Ryan’s articles. Anyone should be able to hook up at the big ditch.

    • The bite was non stop for everyone around us also. And I didn’t see anyone’s lines get crossed! I think all the other guys were just as happy as Ryan and myself to see a school that big.
